Before somone says it, I looked at the links sticked above and found forfactors.org, but that hasn't helped me.

I simply cannot find any place that mentiones the standard placement of mounting holes on hard drives, or CD-ROMs. I'm interested in the mounting holes on the bottom of the drives. My googling has been fruitless.
I also want to verify that the standard screw size for a case in a 6 which is a 3.5mm hole. What does this mena for m sizes IE, this is an M? size?
The final question is if anyone has any idea if rack 500 is really a chassis form factor, and where I can fins the specs for it. I'm building a project out of some industrial components, and the backplane/riser card saus that it is for a 'rack 500 chassis'.

I need these because I'm putting my plans togeter in CAD in prep for buying the aluminum to construct my custom case. Aluminum is too expensive to screw up for not having plans/trying to use the parts as templates.

cant you just get the dimensions of the components, then makes sure everything will fit. Then mark and drill the mounting holes once you have everything.

I may have to resort to that, but I really, REALLY don't want to. Finding the center of the holes is a problem, and I won't measure to the edges as that presents its own hazards. I can't lau out the hardware on a piece of paper, mark it and use that to measure, I've tried that with past projects and it has always ended in disaster. I'd prefer to keep as much of the 'me' factor out of the measuring as I can, I'm bound to foul somthing up. Much better if I can find the specs and use the numbers directly in CAD. When I get the drawing for the parts of the case done, I promise I'll update my project log :)

Have a look at this datasheet; on page 2 you can see the drawings with all the mounting holes.

    GeeK!

i think the CD-ROM link will help. I alo found the HD specs in a Seagate manual. The standard is sff-8301. The SFF, small form factor committee appears to be the agency that creates these standards. The link for everyone's reference is http://www.sffcommittee.com/ie/index.html.

addendum, the 5.25 form factor is SFF-8551.
There is a lot ofinfo on the site if you poke around, they even define the physical dimentions of the standard molex connetor :eeek:

New snag. I'm trying to properly locate the notches that the end of a PCI card's faceplate fit into. I think it's specified in the PCI specs, but the association wants me to pay to get them. The big deal is that they charge fees that would be no biggie if I were a company. I have some info I can extrapolate from some sites, but does anyone know where a free copy of the mechanical specs for PCI reside?
