Does anyone else find them irritating? Take law99's for example, I'm sure it's funny the first few seconds, but the animation doesn't stop after 2 or 3 or 5 cycles, does it? Nooo, it goes on and on! I literally get dizzy when following threads where he posts frequently. So, why are they allowed? What does an animated avatar express that a static image couldn't? How much individuality or artistic expression would be lost by banning them? I know, I'm being a bit sarcastic here, but come on! They are hardly making the forum more desirable compared to others where they're banned, don't you think?
I do. In fact I definitely have one members avatar blocked. Some are OK. But then there's always one with an obnoxious epileptic fit enducing extravaganza that ruins it for everyone.
Doesn't bother me personally have to be impressed that they made that in the tiny bit tech size requirement. Edit: my avatar was forced by some prankster mod I didn't choose it!!
Depends. Some are not annoying, especially if it's momentary, like erratum1 avatar. But others, bothers me. And the worst part, is that it's not Animated PNG, so it looks like crap, due to GIF limitations. Animated png are awesome. Smoother animation, full color, support transparency and alpha blending. Example: GIF: PNG: And the best part, is if you don't like Animated PNG, you can use Chrome web browser, which still lives in the past by not supporting it.
Yes. On a thread with people who dislike animated avatars, you decide to post two massive spinning Firefox animations. Good Job
I agree some of the gif's are pretty bad. I think there needs to be some sort of limit on how much motion there is. Mine is pretty subtle tbh.
Define "motion" - it's a fuzzy term hard to teach to computers. The only thing we can realistically do is work on file size or simply not allow gifs at all, which would be a bit lame. You can always turn off displaying of avatars if you're bothered by them!
You used to be able to press ESC on the keyboard to stop animated images, but that changed around Firefox 20. I now use the SuperStop plugin which uses shift-ESC to stop animated images. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/superstop/?src=api
