I went out looking for a bit of fiber optic line today. Just wanted enuff to try the lighted fan. I went to radio shack and walmart, looking at audio connections, cheapest piece i could find was $20 for 6ft piece. Which was more than i wanted to spend right now. So i went to lawn and garden to check out weed-eater line. No joy there, it was all colored and didnt look like it would xmit light very well. Next went to sporting goods to check out fishing line, biggest line they had was 50lb test, too small for what i wanted. Just as i was leaving that dept something caught my eye.

Its an attachment for a mini-mag flash light, 7" and nice diameter and only $4.97. w00t lucked into that one, coz i never woulda thought of it. I doubt i'll get a chance to mess with it today but ill post some more pics after i do, and if anybody else gives it a shot, plz post results or problems ya run into.

i have one of those from my small maglite, but its too useful to destroy it trying to make a mod, especially when you can get fiber so cheap

Is fiber optic typically plastic or glass? If plastic, how would you cut it without squishing the ends together?

The fiber in the thing i bought is plastic, its hard to get a good cut on it, gotta do some polishing afterwards. Also its pretty stiff so gotta heat it to bend it. It's turning out to be trickier than i expected. Looking closer at PCMod's fan/light, I'm wondering how they heated it to feed it thru the holes in the plexi disk. Maybe they used something that is softer than what i have. Im thinking of ordering some acrylic rods to try, i found some cheap, might be able to get them to work. More info later....
