CNN founder Ted Turner attacked US TV network Fox News on Tuesday, labelling it "propaganda" for its stance towards the Bush administration. Turner also likened the network's current popularity to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in 1930s Germany. "Just because you're bigger doesn't mean you're right," Turner said in a speech to the National Association of Television Programming Executives. Full story, as ever, on the beeb.
Wasnt it cnn who said that the dr kelly was anti american for printing lies about the iraqi war. I have the flash movie at home.
Not sure about the UK, its probably on Sky, but in Spain we get it on Canal+ Digital. Don't know about how pro-Bush it is because I hardly watch it. To say it uses sensationalism would be an understatement compared to UK news networks, but then I guess that's an American thing?
(TV) news in America has become entertainment driven more than information driven. Do a little research online for notable quotes from Mr. Turner over the last few decades and you will find that he would say such things about Fox news whether it was propaganda or not. He's not the most stable isotope in the holding tank. One thing that really bothers me is this knee-jerk urge to compare everything to Nazi Germany. I realize that if we are not to repeat history, we need to recognize the early traits of a trend and try to nip it in the bud. But all this comparrison to fox news and the bush administration to Hitler, to me, diminishes the significant evil of Nazi Germany and shows a true ingorance of what actually happened. Fox news is blowing away every other network combined and they are all sore about that and love taking pot shots instead of fixing what is wrong with their own broadcast. For the record, spongebob and WWE wrestling out-performs the news too so that should put things into perspective.
eddie_dane has got a point. FOX news is extremely popular right now. I think it is at least partly due to its blatantly partisan stance on politics. People watch it whether they agree with it or not because it's controvertial. I can't stand FOX news but I watch O'Reilly sometimes for a good laugh. It's all entertainment though. You can't take any news station here too seriously because its all slanted one way or the other.
I've had this "debate" with people before. My experience of the American news outlets is that very few of them are unbiased and fewer still are what I would call "critical" of the President/Government. I've had American friends tell me that they can't believe how much criticism our press can get away with with regards to the Govt. They seemed to reckon that in the States it would be seen as "Un-American" to criticise the President too much. I suppose this is a bit like Bush's "you're with me or against me" nonsense... Anyway, just my thoughts. Sam PS FOX news is crap by the way
Even cnn is poor, from what I've seen of it. The best bet is to watch as many different new programmes and read as many different newspapers as possible. Even then, don't believe everything that you see. Sam
Agreed. I think CNN is the most professional/reputable news outlet we have in the US. Haven't watched the Daily show in a while. Is it still funny?
Actually, as much as Fox is a conservative outlet and is favorable of Bush, CNN and to a lesser extent MSNBC are more liberal outlets and were favorable of Clinton. There's very few places to get "real" news anymore, even newspapers have been "taking up sides".
