Alright I purchased the x800 pro and I have noticed the entire time I have been using it I have gotten a lot of fps drops in counter-strike. Not random fps drops but drops like in spots where they would normally be. I had this same exact problem with my 9600 XT both on the same system. At first I thought it might be just settings and i messed around with them but no luck, and then I rolled back my direct X version from 9.0c to 9.0b because I am pretty sure I remember this happening when 9.0c was released.

It's actually down to CS itself... I'm assuming you are talking about CS and not CS: Source.

I find that the game is so damn CPU bound that even with an X800 XT PE/ GeForce 6800Ultra I was getting fps drops in areas where there was a smoke grenade gone off, or when a HE exploded close by... etc.

It's just the way the game is, I think :)

The fps drops shouldn't be quite as large as what you were seeing on a 9600 XT though :)

    hmm

well i would figure a dated game such as counter-strike would not be so processor hungry on a 2700+, consider it can be ran on a K6 processor. I really think it is something greater than that. I have tried older catalyst drivers with 9.0b and 9.0c and the latest drivers. Maybe its an opengl thing?
And the FPS drops don't happen like with nades and smokes and stuff they only seem to happen where the card has to render large areas or areas with a lot of people.

Have you tried the latest drivers?

I experience the same frame rate drops that I always have done on an FX-55 with X800 XT PE or 6800Ultra.

As for frame rate drops in larger areas... again, it's a CPU-bound game, so the CPU is having to do more work to render the scene. I don't think you are seeing anything out of the ordinary in all honesty. :blah:

are you running the game in OpenGL rendering or DirectX? Ati's OpenGL drivers are pretty poor imho.

Well its an opengl game so I am running it in opengl and I know that ATI Drivers for opengl are not the best but it is hard to believe they would be slacking this much.

the fps drops are not limited to ATI video cards, I've seen them on NVIDIA's latest and greatest too :)

Try Direct3D - sure it won't look quite as good (though even that depends who you talk to), but the improvements you will get FPS-wise will be well worth it IMO.
