Just a word from the wisened, does anyone know if and when freeware Blu-Ray software will make an appearance?
VLC will play BluRay .M2TS files, but can't handle menus or interactive features. Slysoft (the AnyDVD people) are supposedly working on a free player that will play BluRays, but in Duke Nuke 'Em style, "it'll be done when it's done" with no real progress updates. So, at the moment, the short answer is that there isn't a free, fully-functional BD player available.
Thanks for the information Flibblebot. Much like DVD was in the Windows 98 days then! I'll wait for the freeware before a Blu-Ray drive upgrade then.
Or just spend £30 on Arcsoft Total Media (or if you really, really don't want to spend any money use the oem version of cyberlink that's bundled with every drive)
As Saspro said. I got one of the LG blu ray drives and that came with Cyberlink software. WOrks perfectly fine. And if a better freeware player comes along in 6 months time, then you can wlays uninstall cyberlink and install the freeware player.
Well technically when Vista was released, WMP could now play DVDs because codecs were bundled with windows. Not freeware, but included with most PCs. Maybe in Windows 8 there will be Blu-Ray support...
