My 9800pro is made by ATI which means the GPU HSF on it bites bigtime!! Crusing the net looking for better cooling solutions (and there really isnt much out there for 9800's) I came a cross a GREAT idea!! Why did it take so long for someone to come up with this?? Use that crappy OEM AMD socket A HSF that's at the bottom of your closet on your GPU.

All I did was remove the original HSF from my 9800pro and throw it in the closet then clean up the core. Then I wiped the dust and waxy stuff off the old socket a cooler and placed it on my 9800pro and mark the hole locations. Drilled a couple of holes, tapped 'em, and whamo, a free gpu hsf. A note of caution though, mark the holes on the hs with the vid card installed because after your done the hsf will be sitting on or real close to the pci headers. If the hsf sits too low all your effort would be lost.

To mount it I just used 4-40 screws about an inch long and used plastic washers where they meet the pcb. Tighten it down half a turn at a time going from screw to screw to make sure the hsf ends up sitting flat on the core. Oh and dont forget the AS3.... just on the core, not the shim.

Before doing this the fasted i could clock my core artifact free acording to atitool was about 411MHz, but playing call of duty for about half an hour would cause the gpu to get too warm the game would screw up so i could only run about 395MHz or so to stay stable. Now atitool says 432MHz is artifact free but i just played call of duty for hours at 450MHz totally stable and artifact free... at least I didnt see any artifacts if there were any.

Not bad for free, recycled parts and a couple of hours investment.

this by no means a new idea, has been done loads
when i can be bothered ill get something bigger like that on my 9800XT, a bit disappointed as it doesnt overclock very well on the stock cooler :sigh: (re-cycling what i used on my 5900 here )

glad to see you got such good resuslts :thumb:

old heatsinks lying about are also great candidates for ramsinks as well :)

I didn't think it was a new idea but it's one i've never heard of until a couple days ago, its never been mentioned in any of the threads ive read about video card cooling, so I thought i'd post it for the others that never thought of it. Same idea as what you've done in your link, but again i just wanted to let peeps know just how easy and quick it can be without having to do a major modding job.

    SNAP!

i dunno bout you, but my 7+ weighs in at about 2 pounds, just the heatsink ... nevermind the 6500rpm fan sitting on it. im leery of moving my tower too much with it attached to all 6 socket lugs, but to hang it off a video card and only be attached by the card edge and 1 little 6-32 pci screw?

    imma have nightmares now ...

Yeah I've done this with my 9800P, with a copper CoolJag 1U cpu cooler. I can do an easy 480 core with enough voltage, but I keep it down to 460.

    This is what I used:

Heh, and sorry, but putting a cpu cooler on a gpu is not an original idea (or a new one for that matter). :hehe:

Their won't be enough pressure with them elastic bands and the chances are they will snap.

Remember if its upside down the mass of the HSF will be taken from the pressure provided by the elastic giving a very crap pressure on the GPU, very ghetto thou lol.

Hehe...at first glance I thought that was one of those socket 1 type CPU's....

    Cheers,
    Mike

    P.S.
See you in the "Disaster Mod" section after those elastics break :naughty:
