    Hi guys,

My mates at uni and does a lot of video editing for his course and has filled his 1tb external hard drive and I recommend making a free NAS box with 2tb hard drive to start of with and add more when he needs it.

As hes at uni he doesn't have a lot of money so how cheap can you guy/girls do it for?
he doesn't have any parts to put to this so he will need everything.

-must have many hard drive bays so he can just add more when he needs too.
-I'm thinking AMD over Intel as AMD is cheaper right?
    -small ish matx?
    -under-clock able to save power
    -dual core or more
    -DDR3 2GB or more

The problem with this is if he needs TBs of storage it'll still be expensive atm... Considered a HP microserver? £158 after cashback

    Linky

It's dual core, really small, up to 8GB DDR3 (if you upgrade it), sips power...

I wouldn't be so sure about that - every time it runs out it miraculously starts again - I bought one September 2011 to avoid missing the deadline that was 30th September 2011. Obviously don't quote me that it will continue past the end of June, but in the past it certainly has! Cashback for mine was only £100 so it's actually improved since then! (Plus mine is a N36L iirc rather than a N40L)

    Edit: Ninja'd :p

Fair enough - like I said before, the main issue he'll come up against at the minute is hdd prices. When I bought mine it was before the floods in Thailand happened and I managed to pick up two 2tb f4's for £53 each new - any 2TB drive would be at least £80 each now if not more...

    AMD Athlon II X2 250 £54.56 W heatsink
    http://www.ebuyer.com/237554-amd-at...-socket-am3-2mb-l2-cache-retail-adx250ocgmbox

    Motherboard: 1Gb enthernet ports
    (intel) MSI H61M-P25 (B3) £36.60
    http://www.ebuyer.com/320145-msi-h61m-p25-b3-socket-1155-matx-motherboard-h61m-p25-b3-

    (AMD)Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2-FX-3.1 £32.94

    RAM:
    Kingston 4GB DDR3 1333MHz £17
    http://www.ebuyer.com/179755-kingston-4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-memory-kvr1333d3n9-4g
can be downgrade to 2 GB for £10 but thinking for long term.

    http://www.ebuyer.com/267860-huntkey-jumper-300w-psu-80plus-gold-certified-jumper-300g

only using this PSU as its the cheapest with 4 sata

so if he goes intel its £131.38 + £80 for 2tb

but if he goes AMD its £136.64-149.54 + £80 for 2tb

but with the AMD you can unlock the 2 cores to 3 (i have read)

    what would you change?

My dad just build one at our home, he used my old AM2 socket motherboard with a dual core cpu , 2-4gb of ram and all the harddrives we had left in the house. works fine so far.
He used the FreeNas software, wich is totally free and can run off an usb stick (The drive that houses the freenas software cannot be used as storrage)

I made a freenas server a while ago from an old pentium 3 800MHz chip and 256mb of ram, worked fine for basic things but was too slugish really because I was using something so old. Looks like a decent build that TobletDanillio has outline for you that should be able to take the load. Make sure to get Version 8 of Freenas if you go that route, in version 9 they got rid of quite a few of the nice consumer features like being able to use it as a DAAP server.
You might also want to look at open media vault, it's from the creator of freenas but runs on a debian backbone so it has more flexiblity than the BSD based Freenas.
