My dad just got himself an mp3 player (really cheap and nasty one I might add), I need to find something thats pretty idiot proof so he can rip a few tracks here and there onto the player.

I tired itunes, however they would only rip to aac files, which his player doesnt support, that and it wasnt idiot proof enough for him.

    TIA

CDex - listed here (about halfway down the first post, highlighted in red)

If my non-tech sister can use it, it should be fine for your old man.

[edit] Sorry, I could've just replied with a link to the CDex site, but I'm trying to promote the software sticky - it should help cut down on questions like this.

The default is aac files, but you can easily change it to MP3 - with various bit-rate settings in the options.

I'll second CDEX though, as it's extremely easy to use and very effective.

I myself love Audiograbber, but as far as idiot proof goes, I'd recomend WMP.

Another vote for CDex. Awesome app, and really quite easy to use.

I'll admit CDex is the easiest to use (of those I've installed) out-of-the-box, though I prefer EAC for its tweakability.

I like using MediaMonkey - it can rip and convert and organize your music all in one proggy, and it's designed for large (50,000+) collections.
There's also a way you can use a java applet to access a local freedb so you won't have to put in the names.
But if you just want to rip, Audiograbber all the way - just remember to dl the LAME codec too!
