I am trying to set up an FTP server so that I can access my computer from uni, but I am having some problems, so far Remote Desktop, VPN and and a webcam software all work over the internet when connected to my server.

The FTP (windows) is set up with users and passwords and works perfectly fine on the network, however when I try connecting from outside I keep getting an "FTP session was terminated" message immediatly when I try to connect.

I have changed the IP on the FTP server to correspond with the router's IP, the router is configured (correctly I hope) butI cannot connect to the FTP server at all. This happens on all the computers in the house and on another internet conenction.

Any idea on the problem, lets assume the firewall is off.

Are ports open on router? COuld your ISP possibly blocked port 21? Have you tried a port besides 21?

also is port forwarding setup on the router? your best bet maybe to start with the pc hard wired to the mdm and drop the router. from there try to connect to it with ftp

After several hours I figured out that the FTP server wouldn't work except on port 21. The router was set up correctly in the first place with port forwarding etc. For some reason when I set up the ports on the FTP server, firewall, router and client on one other than 21, I get that error message.

But I would rather be on a different port than 21. The ISP cannot have blocked other ports, ASAIK no ports are blocked as I have remote desktop, VPN and a webcam software on completely different ports to the standard, for added security.

I've been testing these thoughrally to ensure I cannot connect to my server at university.

Any ideas why this might happen? I'm off to uni in about 40 mins!

On some routers i have used before in port forwarding you can set the internal port and then the external port so you could have like such and such ip internal port:21 and external port: 23 and then on the ftp client you will type in your ip address and then on the port you would type 23. Can your router do this?

Yes, that doesn't do anything, the router has port 21 as both internal and external set as default. Changing this to another port, either internal and external being different, or being the same, just stops the FTP connection.

It doesn't matter at the moment as I'm at uni and don't have access to the router and I don't want to risk somehow stopping my access when it is working ok!

Try opening port 20 on your firewall as well. Thats the control port for FTP.

Is your FTP server in Passive (PASV) mode?
