I have a really simple question to ask. Why is it that only a very small percentage of PS3 games are being released in 1080p? Whereas practically every single 360 game since the addition of HDMI is now 1080p compatible. I was looking into picking up a PS3 over the next few months for it's meager array of exclusives (well, just MGS4 and GT5) and as a BD player but it's kinda off-putting when the supposedly more powerful console can't output properly to my TV on cross-platform titles that my 360 can. I know people will come out with the old 'full HD is overrated etc' arguement, but really, a game like Forza 2 that has practically no AA and runs at 720p looks pretty awful on my TV. Note: this is not some anti-PS3 thread. I would quite like one at some point, just when it has some decent games.
My guess would be that the 360 just upscales everything passing out of it to 1080p and the PS3 leaves it how the developers made it. I have no factual evidence to back this up though as I have to leave the house in 10 mins and have no time to research. Or maybe Microsoft have a licencing thing that says a game should be 1080p or it cant be released and sony dont, much like the games had to go through some sort of verification with the old Xbox and PS2 games didnt, hence a large portion of PS2 games werent that good.
I believe every single 360 game is built at 720p and scaled up or down by the system depending on your display choice. The PS3 can display native 1080p without any scaling and my guess is most games right now don't use it because they can't figure out how to get the performance they need at that resolution. As I recall, though, I'm pretty sure the PS3 can also upscale your games to 1080p from 720p if you have the TV to support it. From what I've read (but not confirmed), Sony doesn't advertise or even put "1080p" on their game cases unless the game is true, native 1080p. Microsoft will say that (apparently, still I haven't personally confirmed this), when in fact their 1080p is just upscaling a 720p image. A google search gave me this list:
Thanks for all the info there dude, that's very enlightening. If that is right and something like CoD4 is running at 720 upped to 1080, then it's some pretty incredible scaling as it looks just downright amazing.
I sold my 360 precisely because the abundance of the awful bias towards cross platform titles on it, compared with it's exclusives. Got a PS3, which I feel is a better machine and can play just about everything that's half-decent, that the 360 has coming out for it in the near-to-distant future - minus Gears of War. Couldn't justify them both, so jettisoned (what I feel) is the inferior hardware, with the least potential. In terms of HD, I've got to say the PS3 does it with far less hassle than the 360. And to be honest, regardless of the system, as I don't play on a massive screen, aslong as it's atleast 720 I'm not sure the difference makes much of a deal to me. Ooooooh you can tell I'm being all defensive about my new console, can't you?
...I was going to say. "1080p compatible" is the operative term. Upscaling isn't the same as true native, as well all know. I don't know of any 360 games at all that are 1080P-native.
Just did a little digging and it seems it's a bit of a grey with the 360 in particular. Some (very few, on either system) games run in 1080p native, others are up-scaled internally. Either of these features merit the little 1080p thing on the back cover. Hmmm. And yes mook, very very defensive. Haha.
It's all smoke and mirrors. I'm sure theres some group of industrious sorts out there (some forum geeks I seem to remember), who frequently 'out' various games for lying about this exact thing - I seem to remember some smouldering criticism about Halo 3 and PGR4 on both counts. I'm guessing the PS3 is just as guilty, considering the ridiculous PR rubbish spouted about HD prior to it's launch. I mean even GT5 Prologue isn't as lush as you might expect - like I've said in the other thread, PGR4 is very close car model wise, with GT just pipping it with the superior effects and fancy-dan glittery stuff. I'd say the one aspect of the PS3 that is way superior, res wise, is the GUI and store. It's just as gorgeous in it's simplicity and clarity as the PSP version, whereas I always found the XBL and blade menus to be rather lo-fi and rough looking.
as said above there are hardly any games on the 360 that are actually Native 1080p. most games are 720p and some more graphic intense one are actually less than 720p. then they just use the upscale chip to upscale to the resolution you choose. i think its great they can do that so you dont get stuck with 480p or whatever but it isnt very honest of Microsoft to advertise the games as 1080p. on PS3 games the developers choose what resolution the game will output at and the PS3 does not upscale automatically. But recently the developers have been able to make games at lower resolutions and get the PS3 to upscale to other resolutions as well. I think Sony put that feature in one of their last Dev kits. I know COD4 has that as the game is Native 720p on the PS3 I think and I can force it to play in 720p if I disable 720p and just have 1080p enabled. While GH3 doesnt do that so then that game plays in 480p. So sometimes the devs will put that feature in there. But like COD4 it may be able to output 1080p but it might not be its default resolution so you need to disable the others. I would like it if sony would add a feature that you could have custom display settings for each game, so if I play COD4 it would disable 720p and then display in 1080p and if i play GH3 it enable 720p. How does 1280X1080P work??
