Yeah, I'd probably get wasted on the insurance for something like that. I've looked at other (cheaper) old BMWs like the 325. Insurance is quite a lot for me though even on the ones with smaller engines.

I couldnt give you anything exact , but im told its very similar to just insuring a standard ford puma. Might be a little extra due to the car being smaller.

Youd get stung because its classed as a modded motor.

I'm going to vote for the BMW option though. Insurance on any 2.5litre car will kill you, but you could stand to drop that a touch and still have a great car.

A 2 year old 320 TD cost £12,000...... yeah, I know there's a 'TD' in that, but it's great fun to drive and unfortunately it has to be 'sensible'. I'm sure a 318i wouldn't cost you too much on the old insurance and give you a better 0-60.

I drove a 316i for a couple of years and it gave the same performance as a 2 litre Rover (Yeah, my car history is dull!). Although it rev'd pretty high the whole time - which did intimidate people.

Problem with BMW's is finding one under 20K miles. It's also a nicer feeling sitting behind the 320 wheel as opposed to a Focus which would cost that much new.

If you've really got to go for power, then Asian companies can be good - could get a supra alot cheaper and put the rest of the money into it.... spare parts would be a problem though.

Cheers warrad. I'm not too fussed about power really, something fast would be nice, but I'd much rather have something slow(er) and a giggle to drive. Going diesel doesn't bother me either, low-down torque is nice :) High mileage isn't really a problem since a lot of them are ex-company cars and are mostly motorway miles.

    well said, here's mine.

    http://www.dorkish.com/index.php?a=albums/Cars/Mk1 Golf Turbo

    ;-)

    Mine weighs 866kg, has 204bhp / 246lbft, and costs me £819 a year to insure. I'm 22, with 0 years no claims, 2 crashes, and 3 points. :$

FYI: The R32 weighs less than 1.5 tonnes.

Honda Integra Type R? 1.8 190bhp 8000rpm VTEC 0-60 6.5 seconds for the pre 2001 model. If you fancy something a little less raw the 2001-> integra type R DC5 is a 2litre VTEC, nice, but alot more expensive. The down side is there are very few non imported pre 2001 type R's and none of the newer model.

I've looked into Integra Type-Rs and they are very appealing. Again, there's just the ugly issue of insurance. Almost makes me wish I hadn't crashed last year ;)

At the moment I'm quite set on the Suzuki Cappuccino, but I expect I'll change my mind upwards of 50 times before I actually change my car :D

If this is the only reason that makes you wish, that you hadn't crashed last year, well...
    nevermind LOL ;)

No, my crash was actually probably good for me. If I hadn't crashed then I'd probably still be driving like a lunatic now. Since no one was hurt and it knocked some sense into me I tend to class it as a good lesson ;)

    Well, lucky you...
I almost had some accidents, but I could always manage to avoid the actual crash. ;)

To summarise, here are the cars that have been suggested so far:
    • Citroen Saxo VTS
    • BMW 318i
    • BMW 320TD
    • BMW 818i
    • Daihatsu Charade GTti
    • Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo
    • Fiat Punto GT Turbo
    • Ford Ka with 1.7l engine from a Ford Puma
    • Honda Civic ESi
    • Honda CRX
    • Honda Integra Type-R
    • Mazda MX-5
    • Nissan Almera GTi (N15)
    • Peugeot 106 GTI
    • Peugeot 106 Rallye
    • Peugeot 205 GTI
    • Peugeot 305 GTI
    • Peugeot 306 GTI-6
    • Peugeot 306 XSI
    • Renault 5 GT Turbo
    • Renault Clio 182 Cup
    • Renault Clio Sport (new one that's coming out soon)
    • Renault Clio Williams
    • Skoda Fabia vRS
    • Suzuki Cappuccino
    • Toyota Corolla GTI
    • Toyota MR2 Turbo
    • Toyota Starlet GT/Turbo
    • Volkswagen Golf GTI (Mk1 or Mk2)

The ones in bold are the cars I'm seriously considering, the others either I don't like for whatever reason, or the cost is too high.

Good choices, out of them i'd have either the Toyota as I just suggested, or try and find a 1.9 205 GTI.
The Fabia vRS would be fun too really. Hmm, I guess this is harder ;)
