Ahhh, young Penski, you're not nearly cynical enough....
... where I work, unless its got a 'proper' name on the disk it wouldn't be allowed through the entrance door let alone into the CD tray!

I've found quite a few companies (honest! - big corporates) who are incredibly frightened by putting in a cover disk into a PC thats on their LAN. Over Paranoid? Possibly, but a few years ago I believe there was rumours of a cover disk virus, and no one is willing to take the chance these days.

To tell you just how paranoid this current company I am working for is.... get this: They don't allow staff HTTPS access - yup NO secure access... I'll leave you to figure out why!

The discs you'll find on the front of magazines or in PC World are OFFICIAL MICROSOFT CDs.

They just happen to be the same exact CD you'd receive if you order one via Microsoft's website.

BTW: Microsoft has had a policy of not allowing ANYONE to bundle their software on cover discs for a while now. Which is why you get the official MS CD on the front or in shops, instead of on the magazine's own.

Quack is right. They are only official Microsoft discs.

Well I actually got my SP2 through an MSDN Universal subscription at work, and just nicked a copy for home..

But as I understand it, the new v5 Windows Update is *supposed* to us BITS to gradually download big updates (e.g. SP2) iin the background - which is designed to make it 56k-friendly. That's the theory anyway, and I've no idea how it would work in practice. I still cant see it being anything other than a PITA.

Incidently, MS stopped dishing out updates via magazine CD's because of the perceived security risk. However, some mags (ie. Windows XP mag) will often carry updates on special MS-only CD's. Ie the CD's are produced by MS, and shipped by an authorised publisher thus removing the possibility of interference.

And my final pearl of wisdom is that, yes, years ago there *were* viruses on the odd mag floppy, and it was occasionally a problem. But the mags have cleaned themselves up, and although there is still a theoretical possibility of bad stuff happening, it's a lot safer than using email and port 80!

[IMHO the biggest risk of mag CD's is dodgy (poorly written) programs that introduce dodgy DLL's and poor memory management]
