Hi folks, hope you can shine a beacon of light onto this problem.

My father-in-law has just inherited a new system, built around Gigabyte's GA-K8NXP-9 board. Upon switching on, the cpu fan spins up. When the post/bios screen finishes, the cpu fan stops completely and a continuous beep is heard. However, the computer happily boots up to desktop and seems to be fine.

The ohter problem is that he's trying to plonk his old Maxtor 300gb into the new system as the main drive. He's run a repair install from the off (i.e. hasn't tried booting from the old drive) as the system it's come from uses a different chipset (going from Intel 845 to NForce4). So, the repair install appears to go fine. Detects the previous version of XP, choose repair, copies files off the cd, reboots and then where a smaller version of the XP loading screen should appear (the sort of 'please wait' one) he apparently gets the normal-sized looking one, the one you get after you've installed/setup and XP is booting normally. The computer gets so far, with the loading indicator bar and then resets. Booting up again, the same happens - so it's just going round in circles.

It sounds to me like it's copying the files needed off the cd to setup XP, but upon the first reboot where it should then go into setup proper, it's trying to boot into the previous version of XP, which of course it can't, as the drivers need to be reset to Microsoft default (i.e. a repair install).

Has anyone here experienced either of these problems or are there any resources on the net where I can be looking for possible answers?

I remember when I helped shift his system from a Via-based setup to the Intel 845 setup he's moving from now and a repair install did the trick that time. I was quite surprised, but it's worked for him for the past couple of years.

The reason he's wanting to keep his drive and not format and reinstall from anew is that there are a few programs he has that can't be reinstalled (Quicken XG for one, he can't find the install cd or original key at all and it's needed to keep accounts of the local buff club) amongst other things.

As always, any help would be showered with buckets of appreciation.
