OK, before we start, I must point out that this is in NO WAY ccl's fault, I know that the fault is Intel Quality Control, 100% So, it's been a busy week for me, maintaining the computers of several masters students at Bradford, but it's now Saturday, 3pm, I can chill out.....Wrong.! 'Panic panic, 'puter's died on me, got a gig tonight, help!!,' goes the customer. 'No worries, I've got a spare mobo I'm playing with (ccl bargin corner, Asus maximus ii,yummy you'll agree) nice soundcard on it, zotac gt240, just need a chip and we're away. CCL's open, I'll grab something and be over in a shortly.' ...What could possibly go wrong?... In to CCL, grab a shiny new Intel E3300, all good, signed, check box, all sealed and happy. Dash off to rescue customer... 4.45 pm, start the build... 4.46, open box for cpu and remove heatsink and fan, look at CPU... 4.47 something's not right.. 4.48 look again at cpu, and my brains yelling 'something's wrong...' 4.49 Check the numbers and codes from the top of the chip against the ones on the box... 4.51 yup, all numbers match, it's the chip it's supposed to be, but still something's not right... 4.53 check to see if any of the pins are bent... 4.54 There are no pins, so that's ok, non bent... 4.55 Hang on, NO PINS???? 4.56 confirm no pins on cpu, show to customer, who crumbles in front of me... 4.58 Access CCL website... Returns are not open till monday, and the shop counter closes at 5pm... 5.00 to now, mentally compose letter to Intel asking what constitutes 'Quality Control'? and how I rebuild my faith in them. Thanks Intel, Great computing may start with intel inside, but by heck you know how to destroy someones reputation and lose them somewhere in the range of £600. I said at the start of this THIS IS NOT CCL'S FAULT, ccl have only ever been super, supportive, quick, reliable, wonderful and totally human, this is Intel's responsibility 100%. But my thing is, if you're in an emergency and you grab an Intel chip, check it in the car park before you leave, it may save an awful lot of annoyance. So there. Love CCL, want to punch Intel tho...
?? should I? Having usually built amd machines, the only intel builds have been Q8200, pentium D, etc... Ok, I know I'm not the full loaf, but....
build 100's of AMD's you get used to certain things...and when AMD chips generally work out less for more processing power working with students means working with thrift...
I agree, Intel's QC is way off on this one. I mean, how could they forget to put pins on a CPU? Have you tried looking to see if they've all fallen off? Maybe they fell into the CPU socket on the motherboard?
Hmmm... so if I take the pins off of an AMD chip I could put it in a socket 775... Oh, and it's not as if I could have done the 'What DVD drive? Is it near the cup holder' joke....
I've heard that if you're good with a soldering iron you can cut up some paperclips into tiny pieces and then solder them onto the bottom of the chip to replace the pins. If I were you - I'd try that (P.S. DONT ACTUALLY TRY THAT)
This is a joke, right? I mean surely if you have a 775 LGA motherboard you realise the pins are on that. And if you don't, then why would you buy a processor you can't use?
