What resolution is his monitor and what games does he play?

Do you have a more specific model of the old card? A midrange or low end 7000 series card won't be that much of an upgrade if the previous card is a high end 4000 series card.

On the AMD side, I'd go for at least a 7770. Looking at Scan, prices start at around £90, so that's still within your budget.
From Nvidia you should not consider anything below a 650Ti. Prices start from £110. It's a bit over budget, but it's performance is also slightly above that of AMD's 7770.

If you're not in a hurry, I'd suggest looking out for "today only" deals. You might save quite a few pounds.

650Ti is much faster than a 7770 and would make a decent upgrade. That said, something like a 7850 would be much faster for only another £25 or so.

You say his current card is 4000 series - which one?

I ask because there is no point in buying a 7750 over a 4870 for gaming, other than power consumption and DX11. If you have a lower end 4000 card, then it may be worthwhile. However, the current crop of sub-£100 cards are very poor value for the performance on offer.

Stretch the budget, and go for a 7850 (a 2GB model if you can manage it.)

What PSU do you have? Were you considering the 7750 because it doesn't have any PCI-E power sockets?

You could try ebay for a 560 ti, they are going for about £100 or less atm. It would be a big upgrade from a 4000 series.

Alternatively, you could tell your son that in your day you had to walk 20 miles to school with no shoes in the snow with only a piece of coal for breakfast and he should be grateful for anything as some kids in Africa don't even have 2 original playstations to rub together.

Also I just had a quick look in the marketplace (you don't have access to it atm as you need 75 posts) and Suragh is going to be selling his 560 ti very soon for about £100 pounds so you could try PMing him to get dibs on that.

The marketplace btw is a part of this forum you get access to after 75 posts where the members of this forum sell each other their stuff at a bit of a discount from other 2nd hand prices. Members also usually help with any warranty that my be required in the future and a very trustworthy.

Most initial benchmarks for 650Ti included only factory-overclocked cards, and the graphs compared it to a stock 7770. Stock-for-stock the difference is smaller.
But, I'll revise my previous statement that a "650Ti is slightly faster than a 7770" and replace it with "650Ti is sufficiently ahead of 7770 to justify the price difference". How's that?
A 7850 would be an even better choice, but I didn't take it into consideration because it's significantly over his maximum stated budget.

if he has a high end 4 series card

4870 4890 for example then the only upgrade to that is going to be the 560ti or 7870.

This is a good example of a thread where the OP has simply not supplied quite enough information for us to be helpful.

Exact specs would have been nice. He might have an HD4350 for all we know :hehe:

Why the 7870? The 7850 is easily a match for the 560Ti.

7870 is a much faster card than a 7850 and both are hugely over budget anyway. Only really noticed when i checked his budget of £100.

you can get a 560ti for about £90 on scan at the moment which is a absolute bargain, Nothing can match its performance at that price bracket.

The cheapest 7850 is £125 and theres no way that card is worth £35 more than a 560 ti.

Agreed but, considering the 7870 starts at £175, my question stands.

Thanks for all your help. my son's 4000 graphic card was a low-mid end one. I had a look at the GTX560 but they said was sold out at that price so I went for the 7770 from scan. he also got "sniper v2" free so he's well happy. thanks for all the help and advice.

For a 7770 I would've honestly gone for at least a 7850. It's slightly more but quite a large margin faster.

Yep, I'm afraid the 7770 still doesn't represent good value even £40 cheaper than the launch price. BUT we geeky types tend to ignore the fact that there is a huge market for cut-price/mid range cards like the 7770, so fair enough to your decision. It's still better than the 7750 you were looking at.

As long as he's happy then all will be well. Sniper is a great blast as well :thumb:
