the first problem of my laptop. games won't install. i tired installing my (store bought) copy of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun and the installation would freeze right as it should start putting files on my computer. i then tried installing my (store bought) copy of Generals and while it did install, it won't lay. it freezes at the splashscreen of the tanks riding through the dirt towards the screen with the games title above it. are core duo processors compatible with 32bit games? what am i doing wrong here?
I would say with issues like this, you CPU is the last culprit to suspect (well maybe the CPU and the keyboard are in a dead tie for last suspect). As ch424 suggested I would look first to the video card and the video drivers - esp if the first game has some video it plays in conjunction with the place it fails during installation. Additionally, if this is a laptop, frankly, unless it's designed for gaming or a desktop replacement, I don't think you can simply expect the video card to be able to support many games. Are these games very old or very new? I have found that games don't have a very long life in the world of compatibility. I use to run the first edition of C&C general on some P2 machine, but it absolutely doesn't like anything current even though I was running XP back then as well. And obviously if they are brand new games there are bound to be issues (games are just notorious like that). Have you been able to install other non-video intensive software?
You might want to try forcing the affinity of the game onto one processor - maybe it's the dual processing thing that's confusing the games?
how would one go abouts doing something like that, if one were so inclined? [/slingblade off] it ran fine on my parents P4 celeron @ 2.26GHz, i don't know about sound, since that part of the mobo TASAD (took a s*** and died) .:EDIT:. figure this one out, the worldbuilder app (creates maps for multiplayer or single payer skirmishes) booted fine, generals still freezes
C&C: Red Alert ran fine. ITS A WINDOWS 95 ONLY GAME!!! how does that make any sense?!?! (i ran it in the compatibility mode and it had no sound, but still!)
intel core duo 1.66GHz, 667MHz FSB, 2MB l2 Cache ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 up to 512MB HyperMemory 1BG DDR2 RAM 15.4" WXGA CrystalBrite LCD \thats why they have these stckerson new laptops!
Seems like that should be perfectly ok. I would get on the horn with the manufacturer and ATI and see which might be willing/able to help.
Is it sad that i laughed at that? I think your problem is that the games are rather old, probably dont like your shiny new computer. For the one that actually instals, you could try looking for a patch for it.
i got Return To Castle Wolfenstein GOTY edition and it was working fine, then this error message started coming up every time i tried to play it: Code: Wolf 1.32 win-x86 May 1 2002 ----- FS_Startup ----- Current search path: C:\PROGRA~1\RETURN~1\main\sp_pak4.pk3 (21 files) C:\PROGRA~1\RETURN~1\main\sp_pak3.pk3 (14 files) C:\PROGRA~1\RETURN~1\main\sp_pak2.pk3 (232 files) C:\PROGRA~1\RETURN~1\main\sp_pak1.pk3 (1342 files) C:\PROGRA~1\RETURN~1\main\pak0.pk3 (4775 files) C:\PROGRA~1\RETURN~1/main ---------------------- 6384 files in pk3 files execing default.cfg couldn't exec language.cfg execing wolfconfig.cfg execing autoexec.cfg Hunk_Clear: reset the hunk ok ...detecting CPU, found Intel Pentium III Bypassing CD checks ----- Client Initialization ----- Cmd_AddCommand: map_restart already defined ----- Initializing Renderer ---- ------------------------------- ----- Client Initialization Complete ----- ----- R_Init ----- Initializing OpenGL subsystem ...initializing QGL ...calling LoadLibrary( 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\opengl32.dll' ): succeeded ...setting mode 8: 1280 1024 FS ...using desktop display depth of 32 ...calling CDS: failed, bad mode ...trying next higher resolution: failed, bad mode ...restoring display settings ...registered window class ...created window@3,22 (1286x1056) Initializing OpenGL driver ...getting DC: succeeded ...GLW_ChoosePFD( 32, 24, 8 ) ...53 PFDs found ...hardware acceleration found ...PIXELFORMAT 5 selected ...creating GL context: succeeded ...making context current: succeeded ...WARNING: fullscreen unavailable in this mode ...setting mode 8: 1280 1024 FS ...using colorsbits of 16 ...calling CDS: failed, bad mode ...trying next higher resolution: failed, bad mode ...restoring display settings ...window already present, CreateWindowEx skipped Initializing OpenGL driver ...WARNING: fullscreen unavailable in this mode ...shutting down QGL ...unloading OpenGL DLL ...assuming '3dfxvgl' is a standalone driver ...initializing QGL ...WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available ...shutting down QGL ----- CL_Shutdown ----- RE_Shutdown( 1 ) ----------------------- GLW_StartOpenGL() - could not load OpenGL subsystem OpenGL was working fine before, and i changed nothing! whats up with games on this rig? apps install fine, even open source ones like AbiWord.
what would happen to the programs i have on the drive? will the battery management stuff still be on it?
so i just bought "the first decade" C&C amthology. everything went fine, i just got off of a 5 hour C&C binge. the first one is my favorite
