I always put pins in the feet of my minis (made from cut up paper clips) and then paint it with the mini attached to a cork using the pins, i dont like painting with a base attached as it makes the model awkward to handle.. one thing i've also started doing recently is putting a pin in hand -> arm joints (but not glueing) as during the painting process i like to remove the hands from time to time to access awkward spots.... I always flock and paint the base rigt at the end and i always pin the mini to the base irrespective of whether it's resin or stock gw...
I paint the base at the end of the exercise, but I tend to sand it before spraying, obviously grass after spraying if it's having grass. Build, sand the base, spray, paint the model, paint the base, paint the edge (Black), matt varnish. That's my procedure.
For me it varies on the final affect Sand = Applied after the model is all painted (I dont like to paint sand as I think it looks better natural) and sealed with watered PVA. Rocks/slate = Applied to the base before model is assembled and undercoated with the model. Painted after the model, but before sand/flock. Scenic/detailed bases (like on my scouts) = Applied to the base before model is assembled and undercoated with the model. Painted when ever I'm doing a similar colour on the model. Finally I paint the rim. Then when that is fully dry apply static grass (if its being used)
I picked my old Tyranid army up from my folks last week when I was round there. Still a lot of painting to do (& repainting) as well as collecting the gargoyles & hormagaunts I forgot to pickup. Also got to build the Trygon/Mawloc I picked up yesterday. Let's call it a work in progress
Do you have all the parts for it, how much of its assembled? gilljoy i would bulk order but ive spent a fair bit already on models, 130 on HE and nearly 80 on eldar so cant afford to spend in bulk. New vampire counts models are cool, just a shame it wasnt bretonians or wood elves. Is anyone interested in the Marines that i have, have no need for them would like to get some cash for them to fund my eldar.
not sure [i think i used one of the weapons on a vyper] and not sure... would have to look... ... and what marines
Land raider looks very well. Had my first two games of space wolves tonight, lost 0-1 in both of them. Not bad for my first goes
Hey guys, I scored a copy of Space Hulk at Christmas, in its glorious shades of red and blue plastic - basically, it needs painting. However, I'm starting from scratch - I have none of the equipment, paints or anything to make this happen. Hell, I don't even have a knife to remove the models off the sprues or remove any flash. So, could you masters of painting all things GW give me a list of the basic kit I'd need to have a decent go at painting these? Obviously they're plastic figures, with Space Marines and Tyrannids being the two forces. The box has the Space Marines in red, and the Tyrannids as a purple/blue/pink etc scheme. In my mind I need brushes, paints (which colours?), a knife, a small file to remove flash, and some glue...
Plastic Cutters and/or a Craft Knife [maybe a needle file too] IIRC they don't *need* gluing together but Plastic Glue if you want to glue them Spray Paint/Primer - Colour of Choice, but black is good choice. Either the GW stuff, Halfords primer [its grey rather than black] or Army Painter stuff [available online] Paints - Colours depends on what colour scheme you pick, but usually 3 shades of the main colour plus ones for the details. Whether you go for GW or Vellejo [available in modelzone] or other, is personal preference. Brushes - Fine one for Details, Wide/Flat one for drybrushing, 'normal' one for everything else. Again raid modelzone/local hobby shop for these. GW, Humbrol etc. doesn't really matter as long as they're not the real el-cheapos Couple of Sealable [as airtight as possible] containers for water [one clean, one dirty] and possibly a couple more if you're mixing paints in large quantities. A few bog standard white kitchen tiles for mixing paint on. That's what i'd get.
maybe something like a basing kit so you can detail the base's. I say something like because £15.50 seems kind of steep seeing as you can get things to detail your bases just by looking around you or by taking a walk around your neighbour hood. Hell I used to know a guy that used tha last bit of cat litter in the bag to detail his bases. he glued it on then undercoated itand sprayed it and they looked fine. it all depends on what type of look you're after.
May i first say you lucky SoB every man and his dog wants the termies from that as they are gorgeous. As for your kit... -A set of files for removing flash -Craft/hobby Knife for the same as the files but you use the knife more on the plastic than the files. -Plastic cutters these are used for getting the models off the spurs then i use a knife/file to clean up where it was attached. -Primer, As said above either halfords grey or go for army painter as its a hell of alot cheaper that games workshop primer and just as good. -Paint. Heres a tricky one because theres so many different types of paint for minis now, your best bet for now will most likely be games workshop although its expensive for the ammount you get in a pot as its a 12ml pot compared to rivals such as Vallejo which are 17ml. (i currently use GW paint but I'm going to pick up a few pots of Vallejo tonight to see how good they are.) quick edit. my local non GW shop sells GW paint for £2.15 and the vallejo stuff is £1.40 decent saving and more paint. another thing to look into are washes they are brilliant things by GW. -Brushes some good advice above in getting a larger brush for general painting then a couple of small brushes for different kinds of detail. I currently have ones the citadel starter brush and the rest are fairly small brushes i use for varying detail. -2 water pots at the minimum one for clean water the other to clean brushes in. This gets more important when you thin paint (as nothing worse that white paint turning pink because you used the brush water which is red) -Tiles for mixing is the best thing compared to plastic as they clean very easily and stay white longer. -Brush cleaner, I have a pot of special brush cleaner but if your just starting out with GW brushes or similar then its not overly needed. As for beginners videos etc, I found a few very good ones on youtube about brushes and paint specifically. Then theres loads of other tutorials on there . Biggest bit of advice set goals with painting. E.g say tonight i will undercoat them all, Tomorrow i will do all these bits on them etc. Keeps you motivated and lastly Show us pics EDIT: for painting the space marines I would say to you find a colour scheme for the army you like the most and go from there, As theres lots of different chapters for them to be. Blood angels seem to be the most popular. If you go to the GW website and look through the different chapters and tell us we can then offer more advice for colours, As for the Tyranids (nids) They are aliens so your imagination is the limit here, usually pinks, purples, reds, bone colours and stuff like once again google will be your friend here I will say I have not been painting for very long either couple of months but I have watched a hell of alot of youtube stuff and it really helps cause with hobbies like this they require you to put in a bit of cash at the beginning to get paints, brushes etc it really helps to know what you need.
Snips, craft knife (Scalpels do the job too), needle files, base coating spray (Being blood angels I'd suggest Army Painter Pure Red, and the Army Painter "bone" spray for the tyranids), some brushes of small and medium size, possibly a drybrush depending on your painting preference, glue wise I'd suggest a small tube of Humbrol poly cement. Paint wise, I reckon you're going to need; Black, green, "creme" (Bleached bone in GW world), a wash of some sort (Gryphonne Sepia in GW world), a couple of purples of different shades, a white, a brown perhaps, a metal colour or two (Different shades, of course), and depending on colour preference, blue for eyes/alternate gem colours etc.
This http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470005a&prodId=prod1560013 is a good place to start , get a pot of devlan mud / gryphon sepia wash (and maybe a tube of superglue / poly cement , also a scalpel) this should be enough to get you going.
On this note, don't feel that you have to get all of your supplies from games workshop (although it can be very convenient to get them all from one shop). The basic tools (knives, files, clippers, etc) that everyone has suggested can be found in multiple places (Halfords, hobby/craft shops, Maplins, etc) For more specific items like paint. Independent retailers can save you some cash (http://www.triplehelixwargames.co.uk, http://www.darksphere.co.uk). I haven't been into a games workshop store for about a decade, but when I did their staff were usually quite helpful for people that were starting out and I also picked up alot of tips from white dwarf. Also a quick google search ("how to paint space hulk") found me this: Space Hulk: Stage-by-Stage Painting Guide A couple of dedicated miniature forums that I have been looking at recently for hobby tips are: Warseer Dakka Dakka When you do get your minis painted post up pictures of them here, so we can all enjoy them.
