Hi all, I am hoping that some of you could help me with this. I have put my old researching head, but have not been anywhere near rig in years, or had a gaming capable lappy for a while either. Very soon I will have my budget for a new lappy, and have been looking at i7 7700HQ machines coupled with a GTX 60 for budget reasons. Maybe could could up that to a 70, but really need the processing grunt fists and foremost. I am in two minds though. I have looked at PC Specialist and speced a custom built one, but also have looked at the likes of MSI and Asus etc. The predator looks tempting, but not too fussed about four speakers though for example. Back in the day though I had Intel based lappys and AMD rigs, but have AMD caught up with the mobile quality. The Ryzen 7 1700 processor and RX580 looks tempting, but is this platform a good buy, and PC Specialist? Thoughts greatly appreciated.
i5-8300H is faster/cheaper than the 7700HQ now. Check out the FX504 for baseline 1050/Ti options, otherwise it should pop up in other NBs soon.
Thanks that does look pretty nice as well as the specs. Not sure about the screen size though. Going to have a look at some at the weekend in the 15 inch variety. Going to have to look at some benchmarks between the 1050’ and 60’s. Not going to be heavily relying on whatever I get for gaming, but would look some headroom just in case.
Due to a change of mind, I have decided to wait a little and up my budget. Have looked at the 3XS machine with the new 8th gen 8750. However, the elite machine available packs a GTX 1080 in. I don’t need that though, and over two and a half grand would be better served on a built rig. My question is the difference between the 1060 and 1070. Looked at some tables and doesn’t seem that much difference. Thinking though that the 1070 would be a better bet anyway. Some thoughts would be welcome. Settled on getting the 3XS machine though.
If for some reason you decide to link your laptop to a 4K display, I can confirm that a 1070 will handle things better than a 1060. If you're sticking to 1080p, a 1060 will be more than enough.
Thank you. Probably not, but is something to think about. I have been thinking about the 4k screen option, but tbh unless it is an option in configuration I won’t worry too much. Really the only game I will be playing is the Football Manager series, so a full HD screen will be fine.
Got another question if I may. Pretty much decided on what I want, and the games I will play on it pretty much revolve around Football Manager 2018, and probably Elite Dangerous and Star Trek as one or the other. Because I am used to my Xbox these days, I haven’t done any PC gaming for a long time, so I wondering what combination below would be the better. Decided on a i7 8750 with either 16GB of ram and a GTX 1070, or 32GB of ram and a GTX 1060, which all round I think will be sufficient. Rather than a 4K screen, I am opting for a G-Sync screen HD 1920 x 1080. Any advice greatly appreciated.
I'd go 16GB and 1070. Reasons: The 1070 is a pretty substantial performance upgrade over the 1060 while 32GB provides a benefit in almost no scenario. If that should ever change and you need more RAM in a couple years then RAM is easily user upgradable in Laptops, while upgrading the GPU in a Laptop means throwing the whole Laptop in the trash and buying a new one.
Thank you, That makes sense. Especially as the price for upgrading the RAM is a bigger lump of money than the GPU on average where that is an option.
Decided to plump for a Scan 3XS. Not the monster I coveted, but happy with this. Coming with a 6GB GTX 1060 with a 60Hrz IPS G-Sync 17’3 screen. Finally arrives on Tuesday after having a delay caused namely by the TSB and their moronic upgrade problems. Once I had the payment sorted, Scan had to wait for new chassis stock. Still, rather it done properly and slow, than quick and sloppy.
