Hey guys I go to a boarding school which uses websense to block gaming, downloading, and most browsing. I recently picked up a trial version of AOL and it gets around the websense wonderfully. I just wanted to know if it is possible to play online games (such as Guildwars etc.) through AOL. Please post back.
I haven't used AOL since my 56k days but I should imagine there'd be no problem with playing games through it. Unless you're using 56k of course.
perhaps i haven't explaioned the situation thuroughly enough. It is in fact broadband and the only reason i am using it is because much like a tunneling program, it gets past the block (websense) that my school has put up. I don't know how to only make it so the games i play runs through aol and not the blocked server that my school provides. Thank you for your reply however. It gives me the impression that i just have to change some settings so my computer does not recognize the school's network and only aol's? IDK I'll keep trying. Again thank you for your post.
Obviously I have to say that in no way do I condone getting around your schools filters as they are generally there for a reason and they have an obligation to protect you from harmful and non productive content. However from what I can tell websense appears to just be some kind of proxy though I cannot really confirm this from their website. However my guess is that you are tying to visit sites via your schools PC and this "websense" is acting as a proxy and by simply installing AOL it is just not utilising these proxy details thus you would be able to browse sites that you cannot normally. So in thoery by changing your proxy settings in your browser you should be able to visit blocked sites. Gaming however is another matter as most games will use TCP or UDP connections which are most likley (if your school is setup correctly) be dropped at firewall level anyway.
I am using my own computer since i live in a dorm. The reasons for blocking websites and games are obvious as most boarding schools/major corporations have a bqandwidth cap and their own idea of what the employee or student should be browsing. The blocking of the websites are rediculous in that yes pornography and proxy avoidance are blocked, yet also anything that has to do with entertainment, games, and even some research sites are also blocked. Change my browser settings would not work at all since all connections run through the school server so if you were to change the settings then it will simply not connect. Once I am connected to aol I suppose it works as a tunneling program able to tunnel through an open port (probobly open because AIM is unblocked) in which i can surf where i please. I have never used aol in the past and i don't even quite understand the extent at what aol lets me tunnel through. I also don't really know anything about TCP or UDP so when i say through AOL I guess i mean can i somehow bypass the firewall, using the aol service, so that the TCP and UDP connections would not be blocked.
