So I'm planning a garage workspace, I'm tired of having only a plastic table to mod on. I'm going to make a proper work space to keep everything organized.

Here's the Sketchup of the area; from what I can tell, I'll need a LOT of wood. AND PEGBOARD!

The thing is, I have 2 bikes I need to store (the shape in the middle is my g/f's beetle), so I want to implement some sort of lift/attachment system so the bikes can be lifted off the ground and out of the way.

I'm thinking steel pipe mounting with 2 heavy-duty pistons... has anyone ever done anything like that?

*edit* Oh, and what's the standard length of a 4x4 and 2x4? Too late to go to the hardware store.

that upper shelf looks pretty weak, as does the middle of your workbench. i'd get rid of the top shelf, and put some legs at the front of the corner in the bench.also, i can't see if you did this from the sketchup, but remember that pegboard has to be 1/2" out from the wall to allow for the pegs to go in.

lumber comes in 6,8,10,12,16ft lengths usually.

....and tell ur gf to park here car on the driveway, the garage is a man's place ;) I have some wall mounted hooks which take two adult bikes easily, available from most bike shops, just mind ur head when walking around them with no bikes on, bloody things are lethal ;)

Problem is, i can't really attach anything to the walls. The studs are metal...

The upper shelf is actually not for holding anything except empty boxes. We move in 6 months and I keep all our moving boxes so its easy to store our crap. Anyways, the top shelf is mostly there for lighting; there's only a single bulb in the roof of the garage and I think it's like 20W, so I want to set up a few spot lights under the shelf for direct lighting.

The ceiling is 9 ft tall, the other option was to build a shelf like structure that is 8 feet tall; the lights would be on that and the desk would be a separate unit. I'll post the sketch here in a sec.

    Watch out! 2X4's are actually about 1 1/2" X 3 1/2", and 4X4's are 3 1/2".
In fact, the larger the board measurements, the more they cut off. I think a 10" plank is down to 8" now, so you will need a tape measure at the lumber yard.
Also- The 4X4 posts might be overkill. This should be strong enough to stand on with only 2X4's, (unless you are HUGE.)If you run one of the support 2X4's for the front of the table to to the back, It will be much stronger.
You're going to want an overhead light in that bugger too.

when buying planed lumber, subtract 1/4" for every 2" (e.g. a 2x4 is 1.75x3.5). if you buy rough-cut, the lumber is the dimensions on the label.

Ok, so I changed my mind. The setup will be a large overhead shelf and an L shaped worktable. I'll post the Sketchup when I get off work! Thanks for the info on the lumber sizes; I'll stick with these measurements for now, just for visualization's sake. Actually, I'll change the units in Sketchup to make it easier to draw!
