**** you valve. CS Stayed free, hell, 1.6 still even IS free. I understand you guys have programmers to pay but still, charging us for something that was free? Excuse me while i go get my breathing mask that measures the length, depth, and frequencies of the breaths i take, then bills my account apporpriately for the city, which then inexpliably shuts off when i'm broke.

Besides the fact that he was going to stop work anyway, this means that GMod will become immeasurably better. Before, he constantly had problems with the limitations of the Source SDK, but now he has the entire source code to the engine, so he can do anything he wants :)

I think this is both a good and bad thing.
If he's worked on it many hours (which imsure he has) then he deserves everything he earns from the project having devoted his own time/money/resources to it.
However I fear this may lead to alot of sub-standard mods charging, I also feel that $10 will be seen as far too much by 80% of the community. Only time will tell if it really is a good idea or not.

TBH, it's a good thing. If you've ever been to the garrysmod forums, you'll know it's 45,000 noobs, with just a handful of sensible BiT-esque users. If people have to pay (even a nominal amount like $10) it should cut out all the people who behave like 12 year olds. He deserves to be paid for his work, and as he said, there's now little point in it for him without some sort of incentive.

And btw, Still Seeing Breen (watch it now if you haven't) was made without garrys mod!

    why are you blaming valve?
the team behind the mod decided they wanted to join with valve and charge for it, its not like valve have said they're going to stop it from working if they dont join up and start charging for it....

and besides you can still use the current version for free, just like you can with cs 1.6
there are 2 options here, he joins with valve and charges for subsequent versions whilst you get the current version for free
    OR
you get no more new versions

and it's only $10, that's hardly bank breaking, and it supports his work.

I've never used it, and I imagine that the current / old version will remain free for people to tinker with. I probably wouldn't pay $10 to muck around with something like that from scratch, but for people who are actively using it (and benefiting as a result) I hardly think a $10 donation to access new features is going to kill anyone.

It's a free market people: he's offering something you can't get anywhere else, so he can get away with charging for it. Either people will pay up, or someone else can spend months producing a similar thing and then give that away for nothing if they choose.

or people can sulk and moan about how they now have to pay for a new version of something that was free for a good few days before opting for options 1 or 2.

I've visited the Gmod forums, and they're terrible. I can't believe people actually bother posting there. You can be autobanned for spelling something wrong or typing "lol". It hardly cut down on the idiots posting stuff, since they'd just come back again with a new nickname. The number of threads I tried to read through with BANNED under everyone's nicks... ugh.

I'm glad bit ain't like that.

If Garry wants to charge for his mod, that's his prerogative. After all he did it in his free time, why not get paid for something you love doing?

Can't be a whole lot worse than the steampowered forums, I figure.

The guy(s) has every right to charge for it, and while I tried it for about five minutes myself and really couldn't figure it out, nor the point of it, I've seen some pretty sweet things come from it. Anything that cuts down on n00bism is okay in my books, even if that's not the purpose.

Didn't realise "still seeing breen" wasn't made with Garry's mod - apologies for bad information!

It's still awesome though and very similar to some of the machianima that has been coming out of Garry's mod for a while.

This is agood thing for the fans. I never liked Gmod. I would pay the 10 bucks IF there would be some really cool game modes but the one's that are already in can't compete with DM, TDM or CTF. These OLD gamemodes are still better then anything that's in Gmod. Of course CTF was a mod for Quake and now it's a super hit gamemode used in almost every arcade game (UT/UT2003/UT2004/UT2007).

Garry and his team put a lot of hard work into this project, and ultimately it's up to him whether he wants to give away that work for nothing or charge money for it. He has a right to make something for the time he invests in writing the mod.

$10 is hardly a princely sum, and it can only improve the mod by giving him more time, resources and close co-operation with Valve. In my opinion, it's definitely worth it.

As long as nothing gets nerfed or removed I wouldnt mind the $10 one time fee as long as the old version dosent get messed up somehow with a steam update. I had enough fun in it and with the mods I installed it made it even better.
