The thing is that the technicians are on commission, more they charge for service, the more they get paid extra cashy money. And top things over, they are probably not well paid or the business sis not treating the employees correctly or with respect, so they don't give a dam.
my goodness, what crap. I'm glad I try to educate myself with this website. thank you fellow forumites for educating me.
I work at Best Buy and no employees work on commission, including Geek Squad. I can't get the video to load so I can't give my word on it hehe.
A reporter changed a bios setting that resulted in a "operating sytem not found". Repair techs at Best Buy and Circuit City thought it was a bad hard drive and recommended replacing it. Each were going to charge $65 for a diagnostic test, $60 for a hard drive $15 to install it, and over $100 to reinstall windows. They also took the laptop to Microcenter. They charged $70 for a diagnostic test and discovered the problem right away.
microcenter pwns all. their prices are almost as good, and on some things better than newegg. Iv'e never needed thier diagnostics, I can do it myself, but thier customer service and prices are TOP NOTCH btw, whats working on commison?
did they suggest the wrong part like they always do??? or charge you $100 more then it should cost???
It means that you keep a percentage of the money from all the sales that you make (or repairs that you perform, in this case). Salespeople that are paid on commission are notorious for being pushy and/or dishonest, because their paycheck depends on making sales. They'd rather sell you something expensive than actually fix your problem for you. I'll second being happy that I know how to take care of my own computer. Now if only I knew something about cars, I'd be in really good shape...
ouch! those prices seem pretty steep, guess they like people who dont like what theyre doing. like me with the new part i had to get for my car. £90 for a slave valve. crap!
I agree the prices are quite ridiculous but that's what you pay for an illusion of instant gratification in the American society. About the actual Geek Squad people, I can assure you not all the Geek Squad employees are that ignorant. I'm actually really good friends with our techs and they know too damn much sometimes. It scares me. This seems like a classic case of poor training and position filling in a retail store. I always love when we get someone new that "knows it all" and turns out they just play video games on their PC which obviously makes them experts on everything. Oh, they also passed the online A+ course, so that also makes them experts. LOL.
Can anyone here justify paying / charging $130 to install Windows? I've done it enough times where I'd be a millionaire if I got paid that much to do it. Seriously, it's a damn near automated process requiring absolutely no thought at all... Gotta agree, thank god for knowing how to fix your own problems. I don't think I've ever charged anyone more than $50 for a complete diagnostic, with reinstalling windows, backing up their data, and reinstalling the majority of the programs...
i find that fire dog is much more helpfull i had a problem booting my first build and went to geek squad and there like bring it in so i go to the circuit city across the street and the tek talked with me for 45 mins. and wen i went home and did wat he said the problem was fixed if geek squad wud help more and think of money less they mite have more customers
