What about the speculation that only the 7800GTX in the 7 series would support SLI? imo it would be a completely and utter marketing disaster for those who have invested in it, like myself. I hope that theory can be put to rest... but we'll have to wait and see.

However I doubt the GT would be a full 24 pipes. 20 sounds reasonable, putting it above 6800u but below 7800gtx. Only because of the whole "99.7% of 6800gt's can oc to ultra speeds without issue" thing - I'd imagine it would be the same deal, especially if it's also based around G70. I could see something more like ATI's x800Pro VIVO/x800XTPE thing - hoping the pipelines are good and flashing the bios to enable them.

That speculation actually came from inside NVIDIA (it was an internal slide), but I certainly aired my thoughts on selective SLI support, as have many other technology journo's... I wouldn't be surprised if that hadn't changed nearing the launch of 7800 GT - I would have expected there to be at least two of the GeForce 7 series released when 7800 GTX was launched, but they only launched the one product - maybe that means they made a last minute decision to change their mind.

    Who knows? :)

I dunno, but like I said, people will be really pissed off if they have to buy the very best to then run SLI. In which case ATI will probably have an advantage if we ever do see Crossfire/R520. It's quite a bit less scalable (of course, the S in SLI) if it only works on a single product out of a decent range. I think the consumer expectation is pretty much that every PCIE card from here on out will be sli-capable.

Not to mention the idea that SLI is a beautiful upgrade path for those of us who can't afford to have dual 7800gtx. To limit the mid and lower end cards is to discourage the point of SLI in the first place, which is taking two lower cards and allowing them to function like a higher card.

Seriously, how many people have we recommended "Well, on a budget? Get this card...then when the price drops you can just get another and nearly double your graphics performance."
