ive seen people get the 7900gs to the level of a GT with volt mods and better cooling. so its a fairly nice saving.

    thanks

well i started out looking at the 7900gs and i really didnt kno if it was worth it to spend 40 bucks more for it over the 7600GT, im going to keep this system for a while and dont plan on upgrading to the 8800 and quad core for a long time. So i guess i may go with the 7900GS which brings me to another question, Which manufacture? i was mainly looking at BFG tech, EVGA, or XFX, please post any comments about these companies.

I would suggest eVGA, but BFG is also a great choice.

If you can get the BFG 7600GT from newegg.com, $65 mail in rebate on a 145 dollar card, great deal!

    thanks

Thanks, i was looking at xfx because their card has higher stock clock speeds for the same price, but bfg tech and evga also have good clock speeds so i guess i will go with who ever has the lowest price.

7900GS is a far superior card, also most get 600 on the core and then its real fast :)

The EVGA 7900GS-KO has a nice cooler on it, copper and covers the ram. The XFX one does not look to be copper, so it might not cool as well.

check my sig. I have a 7900GS, the Gainward Golden sample.

You can pick it up in either 256MB or 512MB form, and to answer your questions, here is a link to a review (ok its the 512MB version, but should show you just how much more powerful the 7900GS is over the 7600GT)

    http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=34406

Basically, here is how it goes...

    7600GT, 256MB DDR3 @ 700Mhz (typical)
will overclock, but the memory interface is only 128bit, which means the memory bandwidth is around 22GBps. Thats not a bad figure, not in the slightest, but compare that to the 7900GS.

    7900GS, 256MB DDR3 @ 700Mhz (gainwards golden sample - stock is 660)
256bit memory interface provides around 44GBps memory bandwidth. This is INSANE given that you can pick up a 7900GS for just £15 more than a 7600GT.

As that Inquirer article says, the 7900GS does overclock like mad, i have mine running VERY stably at 654 core and 827 memory (thats 1.654 Ghz DDR3!!) and considering the default clocks for a 7900 are 450 core and 660 mem, that is some increidible overclock.

The gainward cooler is a dual slot solution, so you'll need to bear that in mind, but it is far superior to the stock Nvidia reference cooler used by most board partners.

Look out for the PALIT 7900GS, insiders tip - although it is clocked at default speeds of 450/660, this is in fact a gainward 7900GS minus the extra black metal covering, and WILL overclock the same as mine.

Get it,and watch your frame rates soar compared to a 7600GT, which isnt a bad card, but the 7900GS is miles better.
