Bottom end FX or higher end 4?

    Which would you go for?

The Fx 5200 only slightly faster that Geforce 3 cards, it is DirectX 9 level hardware but is too slow to do much with it.

    What CPU do you have?

    FX 5200 - 3d mark 2001 SE.

    On a AMD Duron 900, I benched "4070 marks".
    On a AMD XP 2400+, I benched "6770".
    On a AMD XP 2600+, I benched "7750 marks".

    Geforce Ti 4200 - 3d mark 2001 SE.

    On a AMD Thunderbird 1.4, I benched : "8200 marks"
    On a AMD XP 2400+, I benched : "10024 marks"

The newer Geforce 4's like the XFX Turbo Ti 4200 (which has much faster memory than the older GF4 models) is available for arround £90 (Direct X 8.1 level hardware) it will provide much better more performance than a FX 5200.

Also something to watch out for is that some FX 5200's have a cheaper crippled 64 bit memory contollers and some have a faster 128 bit memory controllers.

The only reason to go for a Geforce FX 5200 is if you only have £50-£60 quid to spend on a graphics card.

It's for my housemate - He was quoted a rediculous price for a 5200 and I basically told him to **** off and get a decent late model GF4 Ti card. Gave the same reasons too. Just wanted to check I was right in hindsight ;)

    Deleted your bonuspost too :)
