Ive had the cooler on my card for a little while now and even on a fan controller i found the sound of the fans annoying, giving an irritating noise even at low speed. Solution... Mod it! I did some testing using highly scientific equipment in the form of an 80 and 92mm fan and some rubber bands and found that a 92mm fan was the right size for the smaller of the two radiators on the cooler. Yep, fits well that. So i went ahead and ordered a pair 0f Enermax 90mm fans and two sets of thermalright 90mm fans clips. These appeared earlier today with other bits for the PC and another mod which I need to finalise/build. First job, the fan is a five piece unit with the fan rotor and case coming apart, handy as i needed to flip the enermax logo to the right way up on both fans. Then with some careful bending i bent the fan clips out to the required angle so they would work on the fans cooler, end result was this and the same on the second, i also managed to stab myself with the clip hence the blood on the duvet cover at the bottom. Only a little puncture wound but bled a fair bit Its not pretty but works well and matches the case now too From To Also not photographed was my 20 minutes spent wrapping the two fan power leads in super small 4mm OD clear spiral wrap. Ill do some proper photos later and excuse the minor dust in the case Lastly my mighty modding tool not suitable for kids or clumsy people (not sure why I have it then) Now im off to put the bedding into the wash but let me know what you think please
Looks good. Now you have a four slot cooler. What effect on temperature and noise has this little mod had? Gets me wondering if it would be worth doing this with the Arctic Accelero Extreme Plus.
Wow dude, I've used the same sink and I don't really notice the sound. Do you have the PC right next to you or is it on the floor away from you? Anyways, how are the temps before and after the mod?
A four slot coolers fine with me Noise is mainly in idle, the PC sits about two feet from me so I do notice it. Temp wise it needs some looking at. Chip is a 460GTX 768Mb version Temps in idle are fine sitting under 30c which is slightly higher than the idle with the stock fans. Loaded temps were some what disappointing, went between 56-62c depending on load. dropping rapidly when out of idle. Ill try using two channels for the fans as currently its seeing about 7W per channel which means each fan is getting 3.5W as im using a cable splitter. I dont mind whacking the fans up in game as I have my headphones on so i can hear better
The TB Silence only need 1.8 Watts each at 12v. Was wondering more the difference between the Gelid at stock and after your mod. I understand the Gelids were pretty noisy at full whack, which isn't surprising considering they go up to 2000rpm. I do like the aesthetics of those Enermax fans though and it's great that the logo is so visible slung below your 460GTX.
I've solved the power issue. I plugged a fan header splitter directly in to a free molex on the PSU. Its has increased the fan output quite noticeably. My assumption is the fan controllers not out putting anywhere near the quoted 7W so ill investigate with that with some probing with the multimeter. The fan rates are somewhat different for starters the gelids spin up to 2000rpm as you said where the enermax are 1400rpm also with lower static pressure and airflow but its not a vast drop. Do agree it does look nicer even though it has become a bit of a beast, matches the CPU cooler now. Ill do more testing this evening with the fans plugged into the this extra port. Testing will comprise of a few hours chasing people around with my knife on BC2
Not a clue, was in B&Q a few years back, it is however very very sharp and illegal to carry about as its a double edge jobbie An Tealc thanks for the tags Temps are down a touch now at 60c which is fine the CPU peaked at 40c which again is fine considering the CPU HSF is on PWM and wont spin up till it hits 50ish im quite pleased with that. Feeling the back IO plates there is a flow of air into the case so I may look at some form of low speed fan of some sort to pull air in but thats something to work on later For now i want to improve the case lighting which is why i have a bundle of LEDs
