Can I suggest a way to sort out the spam threads ?

If you move them to a private forum then multiply them twice and then merge them together repeat this about 20 times and then delete . I usually puts people off spamming. :D

I've noticed the quality of gd go down around here , I hardly bother read in ere any more I stick to the modding forum :)

i dunno if this has been said already or not but if ppl are caught spammin then lower there count by 10 if they repeat the offense then keep it at 0 for like a week or 2 that should teach them that spammin never counts

    <idea>
how bout creating a spam forum right underneath the GD form that is like the test form, no post count increasing, and so people can spam in there and have no threads closed
    </ides>

ps. what, you didn't like the binary thread. i mean come on it was binary. oh well, i was kinda getting tired of it anyway.

Gordy isn't the first person to say this either.. which depresses me somewhat.

I don't think a Spam forum is a great idea simply because it'll just turn into an unmoderated mess. In GD, we have enough control to say what should and shouldn't be posted.. if we had a spam forum then at what point do you start cutting threads off.

I'm actually in favour of Corvette's suggestion which is reducing/resetting post count because people seem so reliant on it here.

Either way I want to bring the level in here back up to what it used to be. Remember that this is the general discussion section of a Modding/Hardware site, so the posting 'competency' should reflect that..

Aye, I too have noticed the amount of spam croping up these days. Been around here a fair amount of time, and the spam level has stayed quite stable and low until recently

I try not to post too much useless stuff, maybe I could be more active and spam a lot around here, but it just makes it harder to find what you want, dont know how many times lately i have look in GD and found 5/6 new posts, go to read them, all spam. I have started to read the forums less than before due to this.

About droping post counts for spammers, wont it just drive them to post crap thats allready been said but cant be concidered spam to raise there count again ?

Hmm, maybe.. I could always just remove their post count entirely.

One of the more simpler methods as well is to just increase the amount of posts we just 'remove' without notice. "What the eye doesn't see" etc..

At the end of the day, if it doesn't improve, we just employ stricter tactics.. we don't want to get spammers to post normally, we want spammers not to be spammers. If someone is a spammer at heart then we don't want them posting here.

Just an idea, for the people that want a spam forum with no post counts increasing - how about using the Test forum? It already gets spammed with test posts with no increases :p

look you i don't usually use my rag but you are really starting to annoy me. All you do is spam all day long. Why don't you go off to some other forum with annoying people and annoy them. Its people like you that have ruined the gd forum. If you were spamming on ocuk i have no doubt in my mind that they would have banned you after your first few post. I have given you a chance to see if you would post anything useful or anything other than spam but you haven't.

so please do us all a favour and either stop spamming or go away.

I can't agree more with Lazy, whats with all the spamming people? Let it be known that pretty much everyone on the board has "spammed" at least once. Maybe not spam like pointless fox pictures but everyone has made a jibeish "spam" somewhere, I know I have, but I'd rather think I have something useful to say and hope that I do not get branded a spammer! Surely there must also be a way for you bit-tech guys to block messages that consist of a single smiley.... they annoy me...

    E.G.

someone - I passed my test today....
someone else - well done mate... < - a decent reply..
someone else again - < - What's the point!!!!

    RANT OVER.

I think  would be (almost) universly interpreted as something along the lines of 'Well done m8, I'm happy for ya'.

Some people are self confessed diabolical typers and would sooner communicate visually.

But I'd have to say I know a few people that have spammed there way into 4 figures by making the majority of their posts replies along the lines of 'lol' and 'hello'.

How about removing the post count altogether? We keep preaching the fact that the post count is not important, yet so many of us (yes, staff included) make a song and dance about it when we reach a post number milestone.

Why not just make it so that any posts in GD don't add to your post count?

I fail to see what the obsession is with postcounts anyway? - You get a custom Avatar once you get past 75, beyond that why does it matter?

Surely if there is no incentive to post rubbish in GD (which I imagine is the hardest forum to moderate as its content is so wide ranging) then people wont bother.

Spam posts tend to get picked up on a lot more on in the Modding/Hardware forums as they are there for a specific purpose.

Cant we just have the counts for serious on-topic posts like this one: http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18202 which is a suburb example of why so many people like these boards, and not have post counts increasing for things like "Here is my cat fluffy".

Just my 2 pence worth, which ironically will increase my post count!

yo, im with bradford here , post counts are not importants. I think its better to loose the post counts all together, it seems post counts are seen as some kind of status position of each member and people will talk rubbish to get there count up.

Sorry, but what's the f'in point in bothering taking pics of your machine and posting them, or starting a new thread based on some achievement you want to share if people can't say "congrats" or  or whatever. It's the entire point of the thread. It's not spam, it's making people feel welcomed and at some level wanted.

If you want stymied, stale back and forth go to Microsoft's help boards and hang out there for a bit. I was under the impression that people here more or less cared about being applauded and cheered for their accomplishments.

The only point of post counts kind of shows who's been around a fair bit , which is more reasuring for those recieving advice. Thats not to say those with low post counts havent the knowledge .

Also in for sale its nice to know its not some1 who's just joined you are dealing with.

But surely you would know how long they've been around by looking at their registered date.

Thinking about it I may very well recommend disabling post counts in here.. that should help cut down spammage for avatars at the very least.

Personally, I would never trust someone simply because they had a high post count. That's what things like feedback on heatware and ebay are for. (Or if I already knew (of) them through the boards)

As for advice, on another board I know of a member who has a post count in the 1000s. He continually posts incorrect information/advice on a particular subject, and not only do people thank him, other members drop in with comments like 'Yea, listen to ****000, if he says it, it must be right'. Can I drop in and correct him? Probably not, because doing so will probably earn me a flaming. And this is based largely on his huge post count.

Thankfully we've avoided this kind of situation because everyone knows the main players and who's advice is worth taking based on track record. But as the community grows, it will sadly become more impersonal and that becomes impossible for new members.
