Got my shuttle system sorted now with Shuttle SS51 P4 2.4B 256MB RAM 40 GB Hard Drive Pioneer DVDRW Drive Going to install Gentoo linux on it as soon as the CD is burnt. It's my first time, but I figured that I might as well get used to the best distro (personal opinion, dont rant about Mandrake/Suse/Debian whatever). Will keep you posted on how it goes. Hope it doesnt turn out to be too difficult. If everything goes according to plan and I get to grips with Linux, the next step will clustering using OpenMosix.
Gentoo can be a bit of a pain if you don't know how Linux organizes everything, but just follow their installation instructoins and you'll be fine I'm very interested in your trying out soem clustering though, as I'm really interested in clustering, but do not have the resources to use it. I'd liek to know how the OpenMosix works in a real world environment Good luck sir. Any help, you know where to come
I just read a PDF file about gentoo and it says this about the installation: Gentoo takes a while to install – Beginning with Stage 2 install to a full multi-user (no X) system: about 8 hours on a P4 1.8ghz – Add X and KDE: another 10 hours – Add GNOME: about 7 hours – – OpenOffice: 7 hours – Everything else is rather quick to compile . I was going to give this a try but im not sure if i should now
i think thats with a slow modem connection ... its faster with DSL. Also I started with Stage 3. I was done quite quickly ... but I forgot some options, so gonna start again later.
how long did stage 3 take u to install? Ive been useing red hat for a while now (bout 6-7months), is it a good idea for me to try gentoo? i really like the look and sound of it.
Not much longer than Windows XP ... But I hadnt gotten the graphical interface stuff installed yet. So I guess that would take a little longer. I am going to start again tomorrow cos I forgot to install the network card stuff and so I couldnt install the graphical interface.
so no longer than an hour with the stuff u installed then. where did u download the iso from and which one did u download? Im a bit confused as to which one to download atm.
it takes that long because *everything* is compiled from scratch and so is optimised for your system i started from stage 1 on a P3 450, bad idea took about 5 hours to do bootstrapping (~2hours on a t-bird 1gig) then the base system took ages basically you just have to type a command, leave it for a few hours, come back type another command and repeat a few times but its worth it as you get a very optimised system
When I did mine, I started from scratch, with a Thunderbird 1400 and a slow ass DSL (only 100k/sec down) and from start to finish (able to login and start instaling the GUI, and everythign else) took me about 6 hours of work. But of course it wasn't that easy, no, my boot partition corrupted on me, and I dropped into Redhat and tried to recover it, but no luck.
I just tried installing it. every thing was going fine but then i unpacked every thing and the last few things didnt un pack correctly, which will lead me on to my own thread.....
