Well, a couple of things... One, he may be right, at least on a local level. Northern Iraq is largely controlled by the Kurds who seem to be doing their best to ignore the Shiite - Sunni pissing match and get on with forming a country. I'm sure not all of Iraq is mired in violence, you just hear about the places that are. It seems likley that parts of Iraq are indeed safe and by extention that those safe places are most likley to be in the north. The article doesn't explicitly state that this guy served in Iraq, but inferes that he has and so if he's been on the ground and is putting his ass on the line, I'll assume he knows what he's doing until proven otherwise. I'm not sure really what the Kurdish religion says, if indeed there is such a thing. I don't think they're a mainstream muslim group, but rather a seperate ethnic group. As such, pork products may be no problem. Hopefully someone will have a better answer. I guess my point is don't judge all of Iraq from what you see on the news. It is not an entire nation of Sunnis and Shiites fighting eachother in the streets. Yes, the violence is real and escalating, but it's not the whole story.
In the days of its civil war, Beirut sported some of the best restaurants in the Middle East (true). The food was excellent, and the views over the bay lovely --if you had the nerve to sit near a window...
