Cor blimey! Not another transport accident. This does nothing to alleviate the fear that some may have of air travel!
Bad news man Pilot error or an ATC error seems the most likely cause at this stage..... Russian airlines have notorious records for saftety though, the worst incident I've heard being an An-24 pilot getting his 9 year old son to hold the controls steady while he went and chatted to the passengers and the kid tried to do a turn and the planed flipped over and crashed
man im glad to say our airlines have a spotless record no air crashes or nuttin but my heart goes out for the family and friends of the victoms
This wouldn't happen in the US, at least it would be unbelievably difficult to do it. All aircraft in the sky at this time over North America have electronic Collision Avoidance circuitry on board, which is required by the FAA. In Europe, this is not required. Clearly this is upsetting, maybe that will get some momentum behind requiring such systems in European planes. I know that some people are going to say that the smaller airlines can't afford to upgrade their fleet, well, sorry if you can't make your planes safe, get them the hell out of the air above me, my family and friends. Disclaimer: I am the IS manager for a company called Performance Interconnects, a supplier of Rockwell the manufacturer of previously described system.
I'll fly when I can't avoid it, but you can't convince me that flying is safer than driving. IMO that is just a marketing tool. Considering how many near misses occur because of over-worked ATCs, I'm not sure it would be that difficult. Let's not even discuss the malarky that happens while taxiing.
