    Hi everyone!

I live in UK and my provider "BT" offers me up to 8MB download speed, which meant to be very good.
I connect my laptop to Enthernet cable and other laptop by Wi-Fi, but the speed of internet is poor. When i did a speed test it showed me only 2mb/s.....
I am not into all this things but i am after the advice of HOW to get most out of internet connection? Maybe spending some time to set up a Home Hub correctly or whatever, and is it possible to improve internet connection?

I am not into things like this so don't just say is your port that and this or whatever :D :D Or if so please explain how to find it.

Hope you understand, and hope you will help:p

    Thanks.

Sadly, you've probably got most of the speed from your connection tbh.

You might get a few more k's by getting a new router and fiddling about with Signal-to-noise ratios etc, but it won't bring you much more raw speed.

    :( That's bad news.
Btw i did a speed test again and it showed as 6.1MB speed..did another one few mins later it was 5.8MB... wtf?
    Speed jumping up and down?

P.S - What router/Hub would be best to buy? I need enthernet and wireless.

    Thanks.

How far are you from your exchange? That has a fairly major impact on your best speed.

For making the best of your connection, see these tips.

    Ok thanks on that.
    One a-bit different question:
I want to host a CS:S server...but as i have been told i don't have the right IP, it is only local.
What IP do i need? External/static? Wtf is it called? :D

BT ADSL2 lines also need a period of time to 'train' themselves. If you've only just had it put in, leave it a week or so until the speeds stabilise. Also running line tests will give you different speeds at different times as other people in your area on your exchange use the net to varying degrees.

For other people to connect to your server you need to provide them with the external ip.

http://whatsmyip.org/ which that site will tell you at the top of that page!

That's the problem. Has everyone got an external IP or i need to buy it as add-on from BT?

When i go on that website it tells me my IP as 86.159.196.106, but when i launch dedicated server it showes different IP 192.168.1.66..why?

If you're using a router, then the router is using DHCP to assign your computer a new IP address... What you'll need to do, is set up port forwarding in your router to forward the ports your CS:S server uses, to your computer's internal IP address.

External IP is the one the people that are not in your LAN connect to you with.

Internal IP is the one assigned by your router to computers and devices in your LAN, it's usually 192.168.1.x where x can be anything.

You'll need to forward ports as JaredC01 said, because as people connect to your external IP, the connection comes to your router and then it must forward it to your computer. :thumb:

If you're wanting to act as a server I think you'll need a static IP from your ISP, usually an extra few quid a month. It lets the DNS system find you. But see here.

You propably have to turn off the hardware firewall, and also allow unknown connections.

And I hope someone with that same router can help you to forward ports. :)

Go here and find your router. It'll then walk you through how to forward a port.

I bought a proper adsl filtered faceplate and a decent quality short RJ11 cable to minimise any noise between the modem and the phoneline. Seemed to help a little with speeds, but other than that, I don't think there is anything you can do to dramatically improve speeds.

Take some comfort in the fact the 2mb on an "up to 8mb" connection isn't thaaat bad. I've certainly seen much worse.

It's worth checking the wiring to the phone socket you're using. The closer it is to the main inlet for the house the better, it wont help if it's plugged into a socket half way across the house thats been spliced into a few others.

If you're still after a new router the Netgear DG834G are pretty good in my opinion, they're not too expensive easy to set up and reliable too :)

What options do you have under "firewall", a screenshot would be good, but mask anything relating to your details as it could be a security risk!

Yeah the router is on the second floor of the house and the socket it self is on the first only. So i have to use alot of extension...I might put the router downstairs near the socket and use both laptops by Wi-Fi if that will help.

Extension cable will increase noise on the line and slow your conenction.

To get the best connection you should have the router plugged into the BT Master Socket (via the ADSL Filter of course). It looks like this.

Have your router downstairs near the wall socket, and then get a long ethernet cable to your computer. IIRC, you can have a 100 meter ethernet cable and still no/very little interference, while the cable before the router should be as short as possible.

Will the speed be poor if i use Wi-Fi? Because I don't want long enthernet cables running through few rooms oO

Also, would it be possible to run internet on the PC connecting it to the laptop which uses Wi-Fi? Or there is no such option?
