    Hello all,

I've had TF2 for ages but never really managed to get into it. It's a lot of fun but I've never been too sure of what I'm supposed to be doing.

Anyone got any tips, servers to try to get experience? I was on it tonight, have they added some sort of levelling system?

    Cheers :)

Start off playing Pyro. Run in, and try to ignite as many enemies as you can. Simples!

There are many videos on YouTube to show you how to play the different classes.

Load it, play it, have fun. Initially its very simple but there is plenty of depth as cpnPedro says start of with pyro its good fun initially simple run at the enemy spewing flames, you'll probably die a lot but there is more to life than frag to death ratios.

You gotta try out all the classes and find one that suits your play style... Personally I love medic or pyro.. Pyro you can either use the basic flamethrower which also gives you a compulsion ability (right click) and you can blow people away and deflect incoming missiles too which can be amusing, or you can go for the backburner and get the 100% crit from behind. As pyro I tend to just wait for a medic, then rush in and try to burn everyone.

As a medic, your normally chillin in the back just healing, but its wicked fun when you get an uber up and just rush in with say a demo and take out 2 centries, and all the engi's hard work and get a ton of points for just running around.

The scout is great if you like to go in and out fast. They are fun to annoy people with, and it's just amusing to beat people down with bats. Scouts are great for capture the flag since they can move around extremely fast, and you can unlock the sandman bat which allows you to stun people with a baseball.

Heavy is normally used for either support or leading the pack pushing. You got big firepower, and a ton of ammo, so you can just sit there shootin away as long as you have a medic. I find them to be a bit slow, so not my style.

If your looking for a real challenge, go try out the spy. It's fun to play, but I find it difficult to sneak around invis. and try to backstab people. It is very amusing though when your just running around in the enemy base being healed, then BAM healer is dead because you backstab em.

Sniper is self explanatory, just sit in a corridor or in a window and shoot people in the face, not much explanation involved. Your mostly a big support class picking off anyone who is too scared to jump into the action and sits back trying to kill from a distance (demo who chill on top floor on 2fort)

Demo is always fun, and stickies are damn useful. You just camp outside an entrance, throw a couple stickies down, wait, and explode when they walk through. They are a great support class, and they are fun to play. With an ubber you can take down a lot of engi stuff without much effort, and that I think is your biggest role, to take down sentries and stuff with your stickies and nades.

The engi. I find to be extremely boring to play. Sit there, put up a sentry, sit there wacking away at it to keep it at full life. It's fun when you engi rush a flag room and set up shop in there, but that isn't the easiest to do, and normally the engi just sits back and is the big defense.

Last but not least there is the soldier who just runs around shooting nukes at people. I find the soldier to be fun to play also, but i find that rockets aren't the most accurate, especially with larger maps I find it difficult to play the class. They are great on small maps though since a crit rocket can easily get you 2-3 kills in 1 shot.

That's my personal opinion of each class, just try em out until you find one that suits your style.

If you want to be in the action, i'd suggest pyro, scout, heavy, and even demo.
Support and defense your a medic, engi, spy, and sniper.

They've not added a leveling system - but they've added extra weapons which can be unlocked through random drops (which you have no control over, just keep playing and you'll get weapons every so often) or through gaining enough achievements specific to the class. They've also added hats which you only get through much rarer random drops.

I say start with soldier or engineer.

Soldier is easy to pick up and has a lot of skill development possible.

With engineer always remember your shotgun! Don't just sit behind your sentry.

Oh, and stay away from 2fort. Seriously.

When I'm doing well I play sniper while jumping into the action, short-range headshots are sweet and scoping at short range requires balls! ;) That's what I say to your sniper accusations.

www.ukmandown.co.uk i play tf2 with these chaps, a nice lot and very receptive to beginners.

TF2 is just pure unadulterated fun, u just have to find a clas you can get a few kils with, and jump in! personally i started off with the heavy as i found the weapon and the level of health you get was handy for a beginner

You could either start with a Pyro (either sweep behind lines or defend against spies) or soldier (a general purpose unit), but I'd also recommend trying out Medic. Apart from being an invaluable support role, you'll have plenty of time to watch what your team-mates do and will cover a lot of ground. Either stick with a heavy, or hover just behind the front-line healing a number of team mates.

I tried it out on the last free weekend, then bought it in September and have been addicted ever since. I play as often as I can after my nightly web cruise, and when my damn graphics card stops crashing. :miffed:

I love the Pyro. There's little more satisfying in gaming than setting someone alight from across the map with the flare gun. :hehe:

I never really got into it after I picked it up with the Orange Box, but I've just reinstalled it so I'm going to give it another go. I seem to remember pretty much the only class I could get on with was the Pyro though.

I had a go on these servers last night, two of them were full with over 30 players on them. I managed to get onto the arena one and played the Pyro and Medic class as suggested. I totally sucked, but it was fun.

Do the weapon upgrades make a huge difference? How do they drop?

I've also joined the custom pc group as suggested thanks.

Thanks all for your replies, particularly mansueto for providing a brief breakdown of the classes.

    I play as most classes.
If defending I tend to go mechanic, easy to defend as a mechanic.

    For attacking soldier-sniper.

but I'll swap and play alsort during a map. play as demo to take out a turret, then swap to sniper to take out enginer as they replant a turret.

    Great fun

yeah a couple of the servers are down at the moment, shouldn't be too long before they're back up. I rent a server slot so never have to wait, but if you set it up to join as soon as a slot is available you shouldnt wait more than 10 mins.

weapon upgrades are either randomly dropped, or you can work towards them by doing the class acheivements milestones, usually you'll get one dropped before you get the milestone anyway.

I reccomend soldier, its easy to pickup and hard to master. That said pyro's are pure shock, nothing like ambushing 5 people and taking them all out. Useful for punching through enemy lines and running around the back of the main mob from behind. I always recommend the standard flamethrower as its often difficult to get into range and survive. expect to die a lot.

there are a few youtube video tutorials to help you out, just search for them.

I started as a pyro running around like Unreal. Then I moved onto sniper. I think the key to TF2 is what servers you get on. Some can be really annoying with lots of yelling and what not, then others are just layed back and cool about letting the game play out.

I find its much easier to get into when you have friends to play with, or your using a mic and actually communicating with your team, you seem to get more involved and co-operate more
