I just read a comment about the 512mb version of the card and how its out of stock for good since only 2000 were made.

    Is the:

Extreme N7800 GT DUAL/2DHTV Video Card
(512MB, PCI Express x16, Dual DVI, VIVO
    (link for this one here

The same card as the :

    GF 7800GTX 512MB PCI-E 2xDVIVO ??
    (link for this one Here!

The one from dabs iv noticed is out of stocks in many places, is this permenant? or will come back over time? little worried :S

I presumed they were different cards, like the extreme one being a suped up edition but im not so sure now.

Will the GF 7800GTX 512MB PCI-E 2xDVIVO come back into stock in the future?

Forgive my noobness, i bet many are thinking what an idiot, sorry im easily confused if this isnt the case :S just wanna make sure :(

    they are so completely different

The first one you mention is actually 2 7800GT GPUs each with 256MB memory on the one card, the second is a 7800GTX GPU and 512MB memory

The stocks of both are low at the moment, but if you can find one id say go for the latter

No. The Asus Extreme is a card with two G70 7800GT graphics processors on a single unit; it's SLI, but on one card. To the system, it appears that you are using two 7800GTs and subsequently you will actually need a motherboard capable of running quad-SLI to run dual Asus Extremes. This is the card that had a limited 2000 run, as it's very expensive and not exactly practical.

The GeForce 7800GTX 512 is a suped-up 7800GTX 256MB, with highly increased core (430MHz -> 550MHz) and memory (1.2GHz -> 1.8GHz) clock speeds and and additional 256MB of framebuffer memory. While these are currently hard to come by, they will be easier to get hold of than the Asus Extreme as NVIDIA are attempting to produce these in some volume as an interim product between 7800GTX and G71 (the 7900 series).

If you are trying to decide, definitely go for the 512MB GTX - not quite as powerful as two 7800GTs, but it offers the capability for future expansion and no silly external power adapter.

P.s You reckon the GeForce 7800GTX 512mb will become more available in say 3-6 months?

you kidding? they (or something with equivailent power, whatever the name is) will be very common in 3-6 months. Thats a lifetime in terms of graphics cards :thumb:

There will be better cards out though, which will be just as hard to find

are you looking to build a new system now, or are you thinking about parts for one in 3-6 months time?

im building a system in 3-6months time. "Silly to question things now" i know your thinking but I can judge the latest parts in 3-6months time in comparison to what i had chosen now and be a little bit wiser when choosing. It beats researching from scratch again as i now have something to base it against when i do build it :)

I think a better approach would be, rather than try to pick out and price up parts now, just start reading up and getting "in the know" in general :)

There are a lot of threads out there on people listing the hardware they want to buy and wanting comments on the list, take a read of them and you should get the hang of what is suitable for you and your buck. Take a read of some of the main articles too to see the differences (technical and performance) between the latest graphics cards.

Although a new and better graphics card will be out in 3-6 months, I don't think the 512MB 7800GTX will be outdated, the 256MB version is nearly 6 months old and it's still the best graphics card that is readily around that is readily available. This will be repeated with the 512MB version.

Like Mr Tad said, get in the know, read a bunch of posts, see what people say about what and read the news in general. (tech of course!!!) Its the best way to be helped and be helpful on these boards.

I've had word from OCuk (and so has a friend) that they are getting 500 512MB GTXs in by the end of the month. I've pre-ordered mine, and I suggest if you are serious about buying one that you do too, because they will go out of stock as fast as they go in stock.

Unfortunately the word is also that they are possibly going to discontinue them after this shipment and focus on the 7900 (which I'm finding quite hard to believe).

I'm still sticking with my plans to order one now and try and get hold of another to SLI in 4 - 6 months.
