View more project logs on my personal site, XodusTech.com So not all mods are all that pretty, some are built out of laziness, or just dire need. In this instance I really just needed a volume control. But not one of the kind that is just a potentiometer hooked inline with the speaker output of my computer, as I am using the 5.1 channel output. So my best choice was to find a way to change the master volume control on my computer easily. I remember I had saved the drive circuitry out of an old HP usb keyboard with a volume control in it. bingo. With a little soldering and tape I now have a usb volume nob on my keyboard. Why not just replace my keyboard with one that has a volume control, well that costs money. and I actually love my keyboard, its worn in, and I love the way it types, I am not a fan of the bulky rounded large keyboards and whatnot, this one has no more plastic than it needs, and weighs just the right ammount, I just like it. SO here are the pictures of my nob: It is driven underneath the keyboard and out of the way by the old keyboard circuit: It may be kinda ghetto, but hey it works, and its nice to be able to change volume without hunting for my amp and minimizing my game while im in a match. No issues with it thus far.
Rofl!! . But yeah thats one ghetto keyboard alright! It'll be participating in a few drive-bys sometime soon no doubt!
I made a small video of it running with my razr, its terrible quality, with even worse focus. but hey. You can almost make out the volume slider open on my monitor behind the volume control I am turning, you can at least hear the music fade in and out. 5 points for naming that tune. The file is encoded in .3g2 format, I know for sure the quicktime alternative will play it, I assume quicktime does as well, free download. 15 sec Volume Demo 124K
check out a griffin powermate, they look better, but props for the mod, its great and works for the purpose!!
Yea, I was looking into a few solutions like that, the fact that it is taped to my keybaord is only temporary, once I find its real home, it will be done right and proper. I was thinking about adding the volume nob somewhere on my computer. Just have not decided yet, if anyone has any ideas.
sweet, the powermate is sweet, heard many good reveiws, i want one, but money limits me to a 19" dell right now.
True. Like I had stated already its not a permanant location. I am still seeking somewhere to put the volume control itself. Just I ran out of time and I needed a working control so I taped it to my keyboard. I use this vs a traditional control because this one changes the master windows volume, and since i have my front/rear/sub output all set to different volume levels it changes them with the same ratios instead of how a potentiometer would have done connected inline with the audio output
