Here is a better sketch of the concept the top is an exploded view of the components. I think this scanned better. It is similar to the Idea mdpflum had but not exactly. Because this will be run completely by the cd-rom itself and it will be a cd-rom not a drive plate. but it it similar in function...
Here is a rough sketch w/paintbrush of what my hinge system looks like... I cut it from a piece of bar aluminum.. You do NOT need to remove the top or bottom of the faceplate to get this to work, You do need to "Bend" the top edge in a little bit so it doesn't rub on the other covers/drives when you open it, but it should not be removed completely, or it will ruin the stealth look.... The idea of stealting them is to make it look like the case doesn't have drives at all, or at least to match EXACTLY the style of the case, which has rounded aluminum corners, not cut aluminum. If you can recess the drive a little bit, like 1 to 2 CM, you can do it with the same idea...
That looks real similar to what I am going to be doing this weekend. Hummmm... Darn Thought I had a completely new one here
Yah those are pretty good ideas... your going to need some fancy jury-rigging to make it, but it will be a great mod. In this day and age, chances are someone else has already thought of the same thing.
Yeah, It's a good Idea, and if you have the case I do, or similar, it is easy enough to jury rig the thing together, there is a lot of room behind that bezel for anything you wanna put... The trick is to not let anyone see the fasteners (i.e. Screws, hinges, springs etc.) As a matter of fact, I used DS Sticky tape to mount my 5'tft screen into the bezel and I had the darndest time removing it the other day... (had to do some cleanup on another "disaster mod")
I have some real nice quick dry clear epoxy I think I am going to use for the hinges and other pieces that have to glued in/attached other than screws of course. will have some pics of the process to post when I am done.
yeah, it's rare today to come up with a COMPLETELY new mod. but making new cases.... the possibilities are endless. i've always thought it would be funny if you put a PC inside a hewlett packard deskjet. mostly because when you bring it to a LAN party, you just have it sitting there with monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and then you hide the wires going between the printer and monitor. people will see you playing a game, stop by, and ask how in the HELL you're doing it! that would rock! (but i don't have the funds to buy the stuff to do it. like a micro atw mobo and PSU) hey.... if project anenome could be done, my idea could too!
what about taking a long piece of rod and run width ways, for your hinge from one side to the other.. i guess hard to explain...
I thought about that for my stealthed baybus, but I couldn't find a good way to securely mount the rod (Horizontally across the entire bay is what I assume you mean) with constant movement and rotation by the cover, it gets tweaked and pulled quite a bit, so I used the hinge system (posted above) instead, it also allows me to remove the entire thing, stealth mod and all without having to dis-assemble the whole thing... also I can remove the bezel without removing the spring mechanism... if you mount directly to the bezel, you lose the ability to remove it easily...
I was planning to take to pop rivet stems or coat hanger wire about a half inch long and bending 90 degrees slightly off from the center. Then I would insert them through some holes and that would be that.
wow, the treads gotten huge. i remember in anther thread when Yoda said 'ghosted' by mistake, instead of 'stealthed' and now we've got a new mod on our hands
my cdrom does that but it has this realli annoying slapping noise so i just taped the back of the door now it doesn't open at all
I got started but did not get to finish. I have pictures of what I did. Basically all that is left is to assemble it. But I ended up painting my case or all but one side panel. should have new picture of that up in a while on "My 1st Mod" ( forgot the address). Will have the pictures of what I have done up soon.
Good... How did you end up doing the hinge??/ just curious, cause you had about 3 different ideas earlier.
I ended up deciding on the two piece hinge made from pop rivet pieces. It will give me the flex I need to do the switch. I should have a pic posted in the next couple of minutes of the process....
Drat!!!!! I could not get to my ftp server. I am going to have to try again tonight. Sorry. Should have the pics up then though.
