My original plan was to get a GA-P55M-UD2..... But im looking at the Asus P7P55D, really like the way it looks with the black board and blue details!!

How does it compare to the Gigabyte?

Stick with the tried and tested GA-P55M-UD2, Its a great all round board :thumb:

What hardware will you be using with it? CPU, GPU etc

I5 760 cpu, GPU will be a cheap passive one, as this build wont be for gaming. Ive no plans to overclock this PC eitha.

I just really like the way the Asus looks, will look great inside a black case!! Also i didnt realise the P55m-ud2 was a uATX, not that it matters much.

Just thought id see what peoples opinions were on the Asus.

Asus as a brand, I think, makes really great stuff.

I've had two Asus graphics cards, three motherboards, and various peripherals over the years and the above parts have been reliable, long lasting, and strong performers throughout. I currently run a Asus P6T Deluxe v2 mobo with an Asus 5850 TOP graphics card, and I'm really happy with both. They also have nice design! I'm with you in that Gigabyte, another high-quality vendor, have a pretty ugly color pallet where as Asus's use of red, black, orange, blue, white together almost always looks really nice.

In the end it sounds like you want the Asus. If you're not going to OC and aren't worried about performance i'd say go for it. Asus is just as high quality a vendor as gigabyte, if not more so, hands down.

I think with the Asus vs Gigabyte opinion you'll get a pretty even split as they both produce top quality kit at competitive prices...

Asus, Gigabyte, and MSI are the top brands of motherboards around. You shouldn't have any doubt on quality of any of their products.

My recommendation is get the one that has the right price.

I tend to use Asus gear a lot, I've never had any trouble with it and like you say the red/balck does look nice, but there's nothing to choose between the 2 boards.

In terms of money, i liked the £80 price of the Gigabyte as i couldnt find a bad word about it. I think the Asus is around £100, so i guess im paying more for the looks, being a full ATM board and a few more expansion slots?

Im terms of performance without any tweeting, are they quite simalar?

Hmmm im not sure what to do, maybe wait and see if either comes on a today only deal from Scan as thats all im really waiting for, nothing else to stop me buying my final parts.

    Cheers for the replys

Asus has always been better value for money and the most reliable for me. I have put numerous (desktop and server) Asus components through HELL and they still work no issues!

Although I just bought a Gigabyte GT240. Will see how it holds up

I would not touch another Asus motherboards ever again!!

I use to think Asus was a good company with superior motherboards to the competition. How wrong I was.

I have owned many Asus boards till a couple of years ago. Owning the Asus x38 Formula board. I experience nothing but big problems. I went though 3 of these boards. I gave up thinking it may just be that board. Then I decided to go all out with the Asus x38 Maximus Extreme and decided to buy 4x1gb DDR3 1600mhz ram. Back then you are looking at £400 just for the ram.
Anyway, as soon as I got this board I had nothing but problems. So I thought it must be the ram. Tested the ram and it was fine. So another RMA motherboard. Got the next one to find the same problems again. By now I'm getting extremely Pi**ed off and have decided never to buy another Asus motherboard again.

So ever since then I have always had a Gigabyte motherboard and will never change.
    Pros.
    Very overclockerable,
    Stable,
    Solid build quality,
    Great bios,
    Great board layout,

    Cons,
Some of there boards heatsink suck and are not very well thought though.

The UD7 has this problem, but is now fixed with the waterblocks in place.

    Simon.

How many times have I read that Simon? :p X38 dude - that's some years ago now! Did you ever consider the ram was not QVLd with the board? ;)

Tbh either company is just as good as the other.

I do like Gigabyte but depending on my mood I find the colour scheme a bit... not garish like a DFI but just not to my taste.

I often wanted to make love to my A8N-SLI SE, on the other hand.

Sorry for the repost on this subject Bindibadgi. Lol

Maybe I had a bad batch, but it was enough to put me off.

Anyway, going back to when CPC had the Maximus Extreme, for their benchmarking, they where running 2x1GB 1866mhz ram.

I tried every setting in the bios to make the board stable. Setting the ram to 1066/1333/1600 etc. Running with 1/2/4 sticks in etc. Anyway the board would post fine without overclocking the CPU and leaving the ram to run at default 1333mhz with my QX9650.

When X48 came out I went for the Gigabyte x48 DS4 which is a midrange board. I was reluctant to go all out for the DS6. (Once bitten-Twice shy) with going for the high end gear.
So back to DDR2 800mhz. Added my QX9650 to the board. Straight into bios and set 400x10 with 1.41v and BOOM!! 4ghz stable for 2yrs solid.

After that I never looked back and have stuck with Gigabyte.
The UD7 has given me the same pleasure with no head aches as has my previous Gigabyte boards.

    Simon.

asus is how id go at this minute

but if your not overclocking you can get a cheap as chips p55 board for about £75 on scan and i think thats even made by asus or msi.

ive owned 3 asus boards in x58 range

Asus Rampage III Extreme Intel X58 ( 980 cpu )
    Asus Rampage II ( 930 cpu ) ( now parents pc )
    Asus P6T deluxe ( 920 cpu ) ( now sisters pc )

all overclocked to 4ghz without alot of issues.

980 hits 4.7ghz on water its fun.

    asus fan i guess

I'd recommend the Gigabyte. I can't comment on the Sata3 and USB3 as I don't use them, but all the reviews I've read show fine performance. I wouldn't say it's a gimmick, as you will probably use USB3/SATA3 devices in the near future that make you wish you had the Gigabyte.
