While constructing my new build I have noticed that some gigabyte (actually every board I have checked) motherboards have a propriety LAN chip. Are there Linux drivers for these? Have people had any issues with Linux combatability with gigabyte hardware?

    Thanks.

    From the GA-P35-DQ6 motherboard:

    Chipset

    1. Northbridge: Intel® P35 Express Chipset
    2. Southbridge: Intel® ICH9R
    3. T.I IEEE 1394 Controller
    4. Gigabit Lan Controller
    5. 8 Channels ALC889A Audio controller

Is 4. not a propriety LAN controller made my Gigabyte?

That's the intel one I believe. I've not seen an onboard ethernet unsupported by linux yet

It's a realtek chipset: I managed to find a photo (does NO ONE else to click for wins?) that shows the little crab on it. It'll likely be the PCI-Express Gigabit chipset (RTL8111b?)

It's just someone at Gigabyte not knowing at the time of writing or being very lazy.

    It's on Gigabyte's website - it is a Realtek 8111/8168 LAN Driver.
    http://www.gigabyte.eu/Support/Moth...erboard&ProductID=2532&ProductName=GA-P35-DQ6

I found it under the LAN section

I went to the website and this is what they're say about Linux drives:
Due to different Linux support condition provided by chipset vendors, please download Linux driver from chipset vendors' website or 3rd party website.

    So start searching...

Really shouldn't need to do any searching, perhaps some compiling though. Realtek are pretty good with linux support

    SoK -

    Gigabyte = Mobo Manufacturer
Gigabit = 1000MHz network connection (ie. 10x faster than the usual ones).

Thanks to all for clearing this up for me. I guess from the replies I can assume that Gigabyte motherboards are normally fully compatible with available streams of linux. Thanks all.

Wouldn't go that far, but most bits will work fine under Linux.
