    Hello,

I REALLY want a Gigabyte motherboard. And I need to upgrade my computer (see signature). As you can see everything is fine other than Motherboard, CPU, RAM (as they all go together), and well HDD (old and slow). Anyway,

I was interested in getting the Gigabyte X58A-UD3R, with a Core i7 930 and 6GB of RAM.
Now, my problem is that they are many reports on the internet of reports of coils making a high pitch/whine sound, mostly affected Seasonic PSU's or any PSU made or have a component made by Seasonic. I know that this problem affect other select models motherboards from MSI, ASUS and others.

I am aiming for an very quiet air cooled computer... so low noise is very important for me.

So, on this note: I am l was wondering if the UD5 model with the Corsair HX 620 (the PSU that I have), has the same problem?
If you don't know, and don't have the problem with your X58 Gigabyte motherboard, which motherboard model do you have? And which PSU you have? (I got the Corsair for it's quietness, reliability, and long warranty.)

    Thanks in advance!

if your going to overclock i wouldn't worry about it as the whining noise goes away when you turn off the Power Saving options in bios.

    note: I have the gigabyte x58a-ud3r REV1.0 and a corsair 650W PSU

This probably doesn't help a huge amount, but I have a Corsair TX750 and a Gigabyte X48-DQ6 (yes that's a 775 motherboard) and there's no squealing from either.

Ok good, added to the fact that my brother has a P55 Gigabyte motherboard with a Corsair HX650, at least I know that it's really the X58.

    Ok, sounds good.
So basically, if I set the voltage to 1.2V (not overclocking - not yet), disabling the power management of Intel, resolving the whine issue; will Windows 7 (or Vista) power management still work, if I set it to Balance? I mean I know it will work, I won't get a BSOD, but like will it down-clock my CPU and not have the whine issue?

Sesaonic X-Series. Fan. Tastic. 99% of the time the fan doesn't even turn on. Costs a lot though but you won't need another PSU.

Seaonic have a new range coming very soon actually, I'm seeing it next week. :)

Very interesting, but I am happy with the PSU I have.. the fan is quiet enough.

Bindi, you guys at work don't have a X58 Gigabyte motherboard with a Seasonic or Corsair PSU in one of your system, or laying around, don't you?
Can you confirm that the motherboard (or PSU) produce a whine noise when together? And if you you have the issue, disabling C1E (The CPU power management, or set the CPU to 1.2V), set Windows 7 or Vista power management to Balance you don't have a whining/high pitch sound, and that the CPU can downclock when the system is idle?

I would REALLY appreciate if you take a moment to check this.

Got an X58A + X-series right here actually :cooldude:

And no, it doesn't - C1E, no C1E, never had it whine when using a 980X or 940. Win 7 is automatically set to balanced. Using a 110V feed though.

    I have Gigashite X58-UD3 with Corsair 1000W

Only whine I hear is when powering off the computer - it's like a little pip, almost as if it is cutting power to my graphics card a fraction of a second too early and it's doing its OH MY GOD LOW POWER LOW POWER alert noise.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! :D
ok that is fine with me.

What's the exact model of the Gigabyte board you have?

and I assume you have this PSU: http://www.seasonicusa.com/X.htm in either 650, or 750W flavor. right? As the fanless design is only 400W and I don't think it can power up a a nice gaming GPU.

110V is what i have here, so even better. :) (I though you were in England with the 220V feed)

Rich will know better than me, but I'm fairly sure your Corsair is one of the last Seasonic built PSUs from Corsair anyway. They went CWT shortly afterwards except for the recent AX series.

But I would totally go X750 if you're in the market. Even when the fan does spin up, it'll be significantly quieter than anything else out there and they're rock solid units.

    Using the Corsair TX 850W PSU with my Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (rev2) + i7 930 + 6gb corsair dominator.
No funny noises here what so ever.
    Further details in sig.

If you want to overclock then let me know and I shall share my settings.

Cool Thanks. But the TX series is not by Seasonic form my knowledge (although I could be wrong) :S

I see, you got the best of the best.. well almost... I am not willing to spend 400$ on a motherboard, for a maybe. But thanks though.

CWT PSH series, I think. Not even the newer DSG which is what the current HX are.

My new build with a X58A UD5 and a HX850W is running at the moment, and there isn't any whining.

That sounds like good news to me. But I just want one confirmation with a similar specs system, as everyone hearing is different, and simple age can prevent someone of hearing the whining sound.

I am just a bit surprised that they are not HX620 users with a Gigabyte X58 motherboard on this board. I was expecting a large amount of people.
I know that the UD5 has better power phase system over the UD3R, so my guess that this board won't have the whine sound issue because of this. (Hopefully I am right).
