    /begin rant!

Ok, So I signed a contract to work as a dispatcher for 6 helicopter's at a gas plant. Basically when they take off and land they have to call me so I can keep track of them in case something happens to them. This way we know where they are and we can send help.
A few days after starting the plant operators gave me something else to do. at 10 12 and 3 the ground operators have to call in with their positions in the field. no big deal, most people are at the plant and only 3 to 4 people are out in the field and its not much work. a total of about 15 people. Easy.
this week the plant is shut down for repairs and inspections. There are over 100 people here. and today they decide that they want me to keep track of them all at 10 12 and 3. What? these people dont have radios, they dont have cell phone numbers for me to call. how the hell am I supposed to keep track of them? and if someone goes home and the only person who knows about it is taking a nap, when I cant find the person who went home, I have to start an emergency plan to go looking for them and we wont know where to look, or that they even went home. this is stupid, and having 100 people all call in at the same time will be a nightmare because I have to find their name on a list (which I did put in alphabetical order) and then write down where they are. and of course no one will wait for me to do that so they will all call at once. and then I will have to go on and say which names I got and have everyone call in again. and while this is going on no one else is going to be able to call in because we will be using the radio and we only have on channel up here. so if an emergency does happen it will have to wait!
    This is just so stupid!!!!

break it into different times 25 peeps per 15 minutes, split by alphabetical order. Truely, it does suck though :(

the worst part, is that none of these people know that they have to check in.
even worse is that of the 100 some names I have, I have no idea who is actually here working and who is at the camp sleeping or who went home. bah!

    Radio frequency Identification

Now all you have to do is requisition and install sensors for every part of the site, give every member of staff a card with inbuilt RFID tag, then you can happily monitor where everyone is at all times, all in glorious Technicolor. Might be easier to call the 100 people in all honesty :D

get them to email in every 15 mins. OR Implement the plan and EVERY time someone disappears, implement the emergency plan. They'll get sick of it after 3 weeks.

i'd get sick of that after 15 minutes.
once it hits 10:30 (its 10:04 now) and i haven't found everyone, I am taking my list to the plant control room and telling them that under the plants policy that they have to go looking for these people.
It will make someone royally pissed at me but I no longer care.

I've got everyone checked in who works here on a regular basis. After talking to a few people we have agreed on a few things. first, no one knows that they have to check in, second, I have no way to find these people. third, we need to have it set so that each group of workers has to have a leader who will check in with me for these people.
The onsite medic told me not to care about it because it was just dumped on my lap last second and its not even my job. im not getting paid anymore to do it. why do I have to take the responsibility for all these people to check in when I'm not even technically an employee of conico? I contract through a different company to keep track of the pilots.
this is something that should of been put together weeks ago, this has been planned for months, and its not like its the first one that they have ever done!
Even better was this morning when someone complained about workers without radios calling the control room looking for someone to come help them. and then the control room would have to call by radio to get that person to go out and help them. well this morning it was decided that they should call me so that I can radio someone to go help them. but has that happened? no! because even though the lead plant operator took my phone number did he think that he needs to give it out? no. and could he do that anyway? no. becuase he already told all the workers to go out and get started! How can we update these people on anything if you send them away before we have our morning meeting!!!

have you told your employer what conoco is having you do? i bet if they are only paying you to keep track of the choppers they will stand up for you. (or else send the plant a bigger bill)

it seems like as a contractor rather than a direct employee, it should be pretty easy to tell the plant to STFU.
or else just lie and say that everybody checked in.

Wouldn't work, implantable (affordable) tags are mainly passive at 125KHz and the read range is only about 3" at most, these tags, along with wristband, card, disc, paper, ampules, etc are designed as non contact close proximity.

Active tags can be read over a greater distance but sacrifice size and portability (in comparison at least) due to the fact they need a battery to power them (thus making them active) but even these do have a rather limited range (a fair few meters) and not exactly GPS exact location just 'zone'

However the best way to do this is probably a GPS based thing... there's one that combines a phone and GPS and when pinged will reply with it's current location, and can also receive calls, so kinda perfect for your needs.. The device is only about £100 retail but taking VAT out of it and getting a mass discount should be around £60 per unit...

Sigh.. lets try this again, stupid power at the plant keeps going on and off so I sent a reply to this once and it didn't make it.
    Anyway,
there is no way that they would pay 60dollars for something like that let alone 60 pounds. This is an oil company remember, they dont make much money. Last year this plant only made about 140million. There is no way that they can afford to spend money to keep track of people. (note the immense sarcasim)

hahaha, and a tin can on each end?

Although I think the wolf cubs we saw today by the plant may play with the string...
