Ok, so somehow I found myself a bit addicted to facebook, I never even liked it, but then all of a sudden I was checking it probably every hour, and then to make things worse, it was the top site on my google chrome most visited website thing. At this point I decided this had to stop, conveniently I realised this on Wednesday, so I gave up facebook for lent It's now Saturday, and already I can't remember what the fuss was about, I don't miss it, and will probably very rarely use it once I log back in after Easter. I just thought I'd share my experience as it seems really strange to me that something I was clearly addicted to (checking between 10 and 20 times a day I reckon) was so easy to give up
it just shows how bored we can be in front a computer and how we should try to do something else with our lives during our free time my friend has a coworker who missed a day of work a few weeks ago. The next monday he got an email asking him for medical proof to show he was really sick. He said he didn't have to show one because in his contract it does state that one missed day doesn't require such proof. After deliberating with the other person for a few emails, he got one last message in which there was a quote saying "I am not going to work tomorrow, f*ck it. I'm trashed" where do you think this quote came from facebook is dangerous, people. Make it private
I'm totally paranoid when it comes to my privacy anyway, what little information I put on facebook is only available to my friends, and I only allow real life friends to be friends on facebook. I know people who have phone numbers, address, etc visible to all, scares the crap out of me
^ I think you've both nailed it Not to mention posting your own horrendously drunk pics. And Facebookstalking. Can't forget that one.
It's like munching cheetos. You went off them ages ago and are by now feeling slightly nauseous, they have no nutritional value and you know they're bad for you. Yet you can't help compulsively munching on them until the bag is empty.
On a different note, isn't it funny how there's a specific, 40 day period in which religion tells you to give up something for that 40 day period. What's the point in giving something up for 40 days? <--- Warning for discussing religion.
Nobody tells you to do anything. Lent is representative of the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus was supposed to have spent fasting alone and I always take advantage of it to prove to myself I'm not reliant on certain things- for the last few years I've given up coffee, tea and alcohol for lent and managed it so far.
I never saw what was so great about facebook, I mean I have one but its to keep in touch with people who move around a lot. Lots of my friends seem to spend hours a day on it, I just cannot understand it at all. While they are all sitting infront of facebook for hours im outside meeting people face to face, which in my opinion is a lot more enjoyable!!
T'is as he says. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate to yourself that you are not dependent on worldly things. It is not about what you give up, on for how long, but the fact that you can give something up and do without. Islam's Ramadan is the same thing: it is about self-discipline (you do not only give up food and drink during the day, but also bad habits such as smoking, telling self-serving lies and being slothful for instance) as much as a reminder of the self-denials that less fortunate people face on a daily basis.
Is true, I have never given up something for lent, as it's not something mentioned in the Bible, it's just Christian tradition, though while I was at church today the idea was appealing to me. The funny thing is I even thought about facebook or internet use, but the horror of dealing with so many notifications when I logged back on is putting me off. The thing is giving up something, which is easy to give up kind of defeats the point. Maybe I'll give up kickcat chunkys they are my staple work diet.
Everybody tells you to do something, religion, society, people. Whether you listen is up to you and how much you want to conform.
