But standing out from the pack is a new site called Good Old Games that focuses on bringing old, time-tested games into the downloadable era with low prices and no DRM. Though the service, currently in beta, is still young, it already shows signs of being a big deal for PC gamers.
I've signed up for this beta, but I've yet to get 6 dorra together to buy Fallout and test it out. So far it seems good though, the website is smooth and simple to navigate/use etc. The big test is the games though.
The only flaw is that you can literally pick up all those games for £3 each on HMV and as far as I know there are only tiny, tiny problems running most of them in Vista anyway. Fallout for example runs fine. I picked Sacrifice up, which you can see above there, packaged WITH Planescape: Torment (which is also on the service) for only a pound in a shop and they both run on Vista fine. Imagine how much cheaper I could get if I'd got them preowned.
I fixed your link. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/pos...evives-classic-pc-games-for-download-age.html
That's their biggest problem... and eBay with super cheap games. The game companies will flock to them as they can make some more revenue for free, plus they have always been against selling your games on as they don't get a cut.
That does sound like an impressive service- count me in! Though I do agree - if I don't already own the game, I could probably pick one up cheaply on ebay or a forum... but still, it sounds like fun...
Got my beta key today. Not sure how 'exclusive' the beta keys are, or if everyone who asked for one just got one? I'll post back here with results once I've bought and tried something. Jedi is a gender, apparently.
Yup, got my key too. I can't wait for my new computer to be built so i can start to get some of the games listed on the site oh and i chose jedi
I'm a pirate. Bought Redneck Rampage a few days ago, all very easy, and the customer support is so quick, literally minuites.
i bought freespace and freespace 2 very painless. How ever i would appretiate the ability to prchase multiple items at once.
Could do with a better selection IMO, but it's a great concept. Now figure out a novel way to automatically WINE them and in doing so make them OS X and Linux-compatible
