I have Vista Ultimate 32-bit, but want 64-bit. Do I have to buy an upgrade or the full version or is something easier like a patch?

you have to get a 64-bit disk. any version will do. borrow from a friend, or i think you can get microsoft to send you one for little more than shipping costs. then install with your key.

doesn't ultimate come bundled with both 32 and 64 bit disks though?

64-bit disk, Microsoft charge extra moneys. For the disk.

Your need the disc, and your need a new install.
No upgrade possible from 32bit to 64bit.
