I've had my SK8N/FX-51 for almost 2 years, it's time for an upgrade! I'm not looking to buy an amazing gaming machine, I just want something cheap and at least as quick as my current setup. Also, I need support for Windows XP Professional (32-bit), Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit), 2 IDE DVD drives, 1 IDE hard drive, 2 SATA hard drives, gigabit ethernet, my PCI soundcard, and my power supply (Antec Neo HE550). These are the parts I've picked out: Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Asus P5LD2 R2.0 4x Geil 1GB DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) PNY XLR8 GeForce 880GTS Are these the best parts for me? Could I get something else to save money or get better performance for the same price? Thanks PS - What should I do with 3GB (4 DIMMs) of registered ECC memory, an ATI Radeon 9800 XT, an Athlon FX-51, and an Asus SK8N?
Turn ur old pc into a media center/home server/ftp etc, theres alot of things you can do, or sell the old pc to incr the funds for ur new rig, upgrade to the e6600 when price drops in 5 dayz, or if you can stretch, q6600, you wont regret getting the quad core, and with that 8800, ur set for a sick machine for atleast 8 months.
What kind of resolution will you be running? That will affect your graphics card choice significantly
I would sell this barebones if I could find anyone to buy it. I'm not going to buy the parts today, just in the next month or so, which means I'll wait until the last possible moment. And quad-core is too much money. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 204B that runs at 1600x1200, but I don't have any issues with turning the resolution down to play games. Why not? It has a 24-pin ATX connection and a 4-pin CPU connection and some 8-pin thing that I don't use right now. Thanks for the input so far, I appreciate it!
Well an 8800GTS will be fine for current non intense DX10 games at 1600x1200, but you'd need a 640MB version. But if you can afford the GTX then you should.
It's a compatibility issue that is ongoing with Antec and Asus. Look at feedback from people having problems with the Antec NeoHE 550 and you will see they all have Asus motherboards. Do a search around some hardware forums and you will see this is a known problem.
No, it's not. Only the original NeoHE's, and the A8N's. There is NO issue with ANY other Asus + Antec. you will be fine.
Looks good. The GTS will be fine at 1600*1200 or below. Seem to remember reading somewhere that most of the current gen DX10 cards might well struggle with high detail/res/aa/af DX10 anyway so there's not a huge amount of point in spending out on a GTX if you have a budget. You might find you have a bottleneck with the 6350 and a GTX too, won't be huge but it will be there. Otherwise, its a well balanced system, should be a nice upgrade.
Okay, I guess he'll find out. But I have seen plenty of flack from Asus users still, P5B, P5K's and Intel motherboards.....oh wait, who made Intels until just this year....oh yeah, Asus. Hopefully you are right and I am wrong.
Whoa! Cancel the upgrade. I was going to upgrade because I couldn't get Vista to work on my current hardware, but it works now. So I guess I'll be saving my money for college (probably a good thing). Thanks for the input, though!
