For some reason those desktop search programs don't seem to want to do what they imply in their names and that is search for files. Are there any desktop search programs that can actually index all types of files rather than emails, multimedia and documents? When I search for something like msconf.dll or something I'd like that to appear in the results. Neither Copernic, Yahoo nor Google desktop searches allow this for some reason.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with Windows inbuilt search function, is there a reason you don't just use that.

Yes: it's slow. Is there a reason the indexing search programs don't add all your files to their index?

Silly question, but have you enabled the Indexing Service in XP's Search?

Hmm, I thought I had the indexing service enabled but it apparently not. Still I'm not sure how effective it will be; that's the reason I thought they were adding a proper fast search service to Longhorn. At the moment it seems to create an index for your initial search so that subsequent searches are much faster but then later on the index appears to be recreated and so searches become much slower again. Then again I am probably not using the service correctly or not giving it a chance to build up the index...

Reading the Help system it still won't include non-textish files like your dll example unless you edit the iFilter somehow...
