Are they updating their line of powerbooks shortly?

  2. It's always a good time to buy a Mac! [/fanboy]

As the Intel's have been announced I'd wait, either for the actual MacIntels to come out or for the drop in price as they get rid of the current IBM line. If you can't wait there's no reason not to buy one now, if there is an update to the powerbook line it'll only be a minor one.

isnt that a silly question, its like saying "is it a good time to buy my new 7800gtx", since every week you leave it, it drops in price and by the time you dobuy it, another cards just around the corner.

    har har har...

look, i'm gonna guess you use windows?

    :wallbash:

i used to be just like you, i hated macs...then i realized all the ******** i had to put up with windows...even linux isn't quite as good as mac osx...imho...

if you like patching things constantly instead of working (playing?) then thats fine by me, but i prefer a computer that just works without all this virus ******** and having to reinstall the os to fix a simple problem...

good luck with that tho :thumb:

to answer the question in the first post:

get a mac...despite the apple switch to intel you still should get several years of good use out of your powerbook...

but might i suggest an ibook? ibooks are quite a bit sturdier than the powerbooks...

but damn those powerbooks are seeeeeexy... :naughty:

Looks like they just updated their iBooks to all start with 512MB ram instead of 256, always nice. Don't have one myself but I'd still like to pick one up at some point. But from what I can tell, apple's always really good about supporting things fairly well, so once they go intel, I would hardly expect them to drop all of the PPC-chip support.

Yup, i use windows, but i havnt gotten a virus in a year or two now (Although i remember getting an old trojan a few months ago). I also never get spyware or adware sides from tracking cookies. Also unless updating once every few months is 'consistantly' updating then sure i consistantly update my machine, just like i 'consistantly' update my software. You do that too right, mac programs have updates too right? Thought so. I'm not gonna argue with you but as i always say "A person with a fubbered windows machine is a stupid windows user, a stupid windows user usually has a mac"

Its computer hardware, you are always buying too soon. I bought a Powerbook just a few months ago. If I would have bought it now I would have gotten more RAM for same money and I would have gotten Tiger with it, wich is going to cost me 90€ now.

I wouldn't worry about the intel switch and all that. They update there range every three to six months. They just recently updated the iBooks.

What model kind of Mac would u get?
And consistent with your post in GH about PDA. If you are going to get mac, then I would get a look at the Palm Models. Palm is a bit excentric with its OS, just like mac.

    L

    I'd go for it!
    Good luck!

    Nice choice.

The only thing I will say against a 12" is they seem to be a bit noisier than their 15" counterparts. Mrs GOO has a 12" 1.5ghz, and if she's hammering it the fan is a lot louder than my 15" 1.5ghz at full chat.

Oh, and as Lovah says - Palm for the PDA. My Tungsten T5 and PowerBook get on like a house on fire. ;)

Yes, but Nvidia haven't just started using ATi cores...

nerd of nerds: You're just as bad as Mac naysayers.. branding Linux as a whole, and completely avoiding *BSD, which, being a Mac user, you must know is a bloated version of FreeBSD? :grr:

Let's not descend into a Mac > PC / PC > Mac tirade, OK?

I've been impressed by the level-headedness of the coversation in the Apple forum thus far, between both Apple fans and PC Users who have wandered in out of curiousity. Lets keep it that way please.

I prefer Mac and I use Windows and I have no issues with it. I simply like the OS X operating envirement alot better then Windows. But I can't have OS X because I have no new Macs. :waah:

the Apple vs Mac argument seems that it will never die. After so long the argument begins to have many similarities as religious arguments; and in such arguments people decide on a position first and then accept what ever data justifies their decision while rejecting that which contradicts it.

Insofar as I can see windows, linux, and mac all have advantages and disadvantages. It is just a matter of choosing the set of complications with which you can be content. If you go with a windows machine then you must dodge frequent attacks and do updates but you have compatibility. If you go with the mac group then you are no longer part of the most frequently attacked group but you have to look a little harder or wait a little longer to get certain software titles (especially games).

BTW: I'm with the windows group. my reasons? There is higher demand for windows programmers than mac programmers where I live. if that changed, so would me position.

I'll be waiting for the mactel update. Its bad enough that something becomes obsolete the moment you buy it, I'd rather not have to feel like I should put my new laptop in a retirement home because it has old architecture ;p

Its something like 30mhz faster processor, and higher res screens, as far as rumours say. Like the 17" going to 1920x1200 ! Its probably well worth the wait :)

How about the 12" model? When do you think they'll renew their spec as am wanting to buy a 12 PB soon.
