I hate Google's Search Assist. Half the time I search for something, it gives me typos and incorrect suggestions.

The one example that infuriates me the most - type in "smells like t..." or "nirvana smells like..."

Every suggestion that comes up is "Smells like Team Spirit."

Has anyone else experienced similar frustration?

Surely that's because people are searching for these things? The real rage should be directed at people who can't spell...

what else would you expect from "nirvana smells like"

It is only meant to convey COMMON suggestions which from your example it exactly what it is doing.

It's only suggesting things. It didn't do anything up until recently. You don't have to click on them :p

Just to play Devil's advocate here, what he's saying is that the name of the song is "smells like teen spirit" but google suggests "smells like team spirit". Google assist is based on popular searches, so like Krikkit said it's not Google's fault, it's the fault of the users who searched for the incorrect song name. How did you think it worked?

You can also turn search suggestions off, in the CP.

Well, I know that google's suggestions come from peoples' similar searches, but it's frustrating nevertheless. Can't google rig the system so that the proper search terms are substituted for errors?

Besides, it's easier to blame google than thousands if not millions of people.

Why don't you suggest it to them. Better yet, why don't you go through all the possible search terms and email Google with the correct suggestion... I'm sure it wont take you too long and wont be too pointless when in reality the current system does an admirable job if you consider the scale and variety of possible search terms that millions of people search every minute.

    ...Or not :thumb:

lol, Have you ever tried to contact google about anything? For most of their services they have a "support forum" that's virtually useless. When I had a problem with one of ther services, I searched and I searched, and a lot of what I saw were people that went unhelped. They would bump their question several times and although some received help from other community members, most ended in "is anyone from google ever going to help me pleeeeeeeease."

Anyhow, ranting here takes so very little effort - why would I want to go through all the trouble you tease about?

I wasn't suggesting you actually did any of it, in fact quite the opposite... I was just pointing out how futile it would be and in my own special way telling you not to do it! :p

Like I mentioned, if you think about what auto suggest actually does, it really wouldn't be feasible to...

The sheer number of possible search terms would make that a very lengthy job. Plus in a way, it's also censoring. Those search terms come from people's actual searches. As we can see in this example:

People starting to type george bush was are presented with the option to finish with a bad president. If someone at Google were to decide that actually, this is unfair and is not the case, they would be censoring peoples opinions by removing or altering that suggestion. Who's right is it to say that your original searches suggestion of "Smells like Team Spirit" isn't a valid one? Of course in your case, I do actually agree, most people will be looking for the song, but you can't start changing some, but leaving others.

lol @ GB was a cheerleader.

You're right though. I'm generally just fed up with google these days, and coupled with the fact that thousands of people think it's smells like team spirit compounded that frustration. Maybe I should just become a recluse and develop a heavy misanthropic attitude.

Slap a BETA tag on something, and you never have to offer customer service!

Given that either search will give you details about the song, who cares?

Who said ranting has to be sensible?

Oh, I know what your intentions were. Taking the mick out? Don't know what that means, but I'd say you owe me dinner and a movie first.

Taking the piss? I'll point you to the restroom. From the impression in your avatar, you should run, not walk.
