I am going to get one of them next week. Which one, well so far I am leaning towards the Galaxy mainly because of the memory issue. Anyone had both of these yet as I would like to hear from you on opinions.
It depends upon where you're going to use it, and whether continually switching out media will bother you on the Nexus. It's technically the better, cheaper tablet, and if it's for home use, then a NAS setup will surely alleviate any memory issues...
I had a similar problem, went with the Galaxy tab 2 same reason really storage, its fine streaming when im at home but say im away etc wang a 32Gb stick in the side and you have loads of storage space for music ebooks and films. Battery wise im charging mine about once a week doing mixed duties wifi isnt always on but seems like most devices to be the main power drain. Bluetooh keyboards are a winner though makes life much easier meaning you have a mini sudo laptop
Lego have you tried reading a book on it yet bud. Looks like Tab 2 it is as i will be using it mainly at home
I've thought about the Nexus 16GB and wondered about the memory issue as well, but after a little thinking realised I should be able to hook up an external HD on it without issues, I hope. As most tablets are powered by the mini(?) usb and there are mini usb to usb power cables to connect most smart phones to a PC/Laptop couldn't you attach either an external HD or (for a bit more portability) even use a slimline card reader and insert high capacity mem card? I know it's a bit fiddly but allows you to use the Nexus as it has great specs with a work around way of expanding it's memory?
Hi all, I hope I can help here with my experiences. I've got the Nexus 7 (8GB) and I love it - it's nice and light so you can hold it single handed for watching video content without your arm getting tired (I can take a picture of how I old it if you want?). However, if video is something you're going to use it for then I'd recommend the 16GB as the 8GB version fills up really quickly. The screen is really sharp and brightness is outstanding. I recommend the VLC app, even in BETA I feel it is the best out there. Music playback is great, the spotify app works really nicely with it - note of caution, the headphone jack can be really stiff, it's not defective, some times you just need to push the male connector in harder. Again, if you want to have offline playlists and video content on your device, do get the 16GB. As for reading books - I'd get the £69 Kindle. If you want some sort of digital display then nothing compares to e-ink. I've only recently got one (I got the Kindle Touch) and it is definitely better. Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 7 is clear for reading, but it's backlit so not great for your eyes, and the battery drains! It's worth the penalty for carrying two devices IMO. As for attaching external USB devices - there is a dongle out there to allow for this I believe. I've done it personally. So I guess your other main question was this "Nexus 7 or Galaxy Tab 2?" - it really depends what you want it for. In your case you have clearly stated what you have in mind. Music and books, I'd say the Nexus 7 (I know what I said about getting a Kindle, but purely in this context, the Nexus 7 is a more enjoyable device to read on and hold one handed). As for web browsing - it will undoubtedly be easier on the Galaxy Tab 2 because the screen is bigger, but it isn't bad on the Nexus 7 by a long shot, I went from an iPad 2 (from work) to the Nexus 7 (personal purchase) and whilst it took a week to get used to browsing on a smaller screen, it's now no problem at all. Please be aware, Flash isn't supported by Android 4.1 (JellyBean). HTH Goose p.s. I'm assuming that by Galaxy Tab 2, you mean the 10.1" device, and haven't gotten confused with the 5" Note 2? p.p.s If you intend of transferring a large amount of video files to your device on a Windows PC then I'd recommend you do it over FTP, USB takes absolutely ages!!
I had assumed that Kov was talking about the 7" Galaxy Tab 2 as it's directly comparable to the Nexus 7". I am in exactly the same quandary matey but I think I'm settled on the Nexus, simply because the screen is better, and it will have access to the latest software updates as they roll out. The Galaxy Tab seems better equipped in other areas, but to be honest with a broadband connection I think the Nexus is the better bet. After all, it's Google's own "flagship" 7" tablet and will therefore theoretically be the best supported by them.
Aha, you're probably right! In that case they are very similar aesthetically but, apart from the screen, the massive, HUGE - never should be downplayed - advantage of the Nexus 7 is that it is running Vanilla Android. So you'll get the updates, which is awesome, but it also isn't ruined by Touchwiz.
Main issue to every tablet if your using it whilst charging as someone mensioned they all get hot to touch after a while. You can hack normal andriod onto any tablet out there ( iPad range excluded). You can also do it to nearly every phone, this been an enthusiast forum id assume most would be willing to mess around to get the software on there tablets. Galaxy tab 2 is the better tablet for actual mobile usage if your sitting at home the nexus 7 works just as well. Also comes with unlocked boot loaders so you can install any andriod rom that you please. I'd still say if you wanted a tablet pick up the iPad 2 can get a reused one from apple website for £270 and it's a bargain at those prices.( wifi 16 gb )
Even as an Apple sceptic it's hard to fault the quality of the iPad, but three things kill it for me: 1. iTunes - never liked it; 2. Size - nice as a big screen is, it does become uncomfortable when holding it for extended periods; 3. Price - even £270 is a lot to pay when you're looking at well under £200.
Ebooks are fine on this as someones mentioned though when charging they do get silly hot mainly as most devices now have LiPo batteries which do heat up a treat. Mine is quite happy teathering ive not had any issues with that my only quibble was he default keyboard in landscape is a pain to use but you can easily download different ones or as i do use a bluetooth keyboard for longer sessions
I'd say the iPad is better suited to more "productivity" based use like doc editings, emails....posting on tech forums.... It's down to the screen real-estate - I do type on my Nexus 7, but I hold it like a phone and use my thumbs, where as on the iPad I typed like a normal keyboard. There is a massive difference between the 2 and the 3 in terms of the screen clarity (down to the retina display obviously). Would you agree?
I personally would go with the nexus 7. I'm looking to pick one up in the next couple of weeks myself, to hopefully stop the family arguements about who is on the iPad next. By the way if anyone knows any voucher codes can they please post them
I use swift key on my phone but haven't found the need for it on the Nexus 7 - in portrait orientation it is actually the perfect form factor for thumb typing. That's not to say you shouldn't use SWYPE, that's obviously a personal preference, I just wanted to point that out. For my money, and having worked on both side by side, the Nexus 7 is where I put my hard earned. It is a lovely device!
Right going for a Asus nexus tablet but can someone direct me too an exteranl hard drive and cable for it please
Found this so far http://www.staples.co.uk/technology/data-storage/external-hard-drives/wi-drive-32gb-black
Check the main nexus thread mate, there is some recent discussion over what cable and app can be used. It mighty be worth looking at the xda developer forums too as they have some info on what usb storage drives work and those that don't! I think it will depend on whether you plan on rooting the nexus or not? It is possible to use external storage without doing so though
