From what I've heard, its just gonna be some 'nix clone with a few tweaks, just a note :)

It's intresting though, makes me wonder to what extent google will get into the OS business.

i always thought google would make their own OS not reallyy enough info here to have a proper discusion over it. It would probably be a success due to have big google are.

It's not like they're short of cash - they could pay for the development of their own Linux Distro without any trouble whatsoever. :)

it would be amazing with a google OS i can imagine it would be pretty cool, creative, packed with a reasonable amount of features and simple. i think support would be quite good too :p i would run it...

Good idea, but I don't think it'll work, unless they can make the OS very easy to use.

I can see this being a great idea for older people who just want something to keep in contact with their children and what not.

sounds like a great idea but I dont think it will work as well either...

Still I wonder if there will be any possibilities to turn it into an HTPC or something or if it will be incapable of any upgrades.

I too had a nagging feeling a GoogleOS was on it's way, and yes, a *nix clone with tweaks was always the most obvious choice for them.

This is gonna be cool. I'm covering the keynote on Friday afternoon, so looking forward to that now EVEN more :D

I am afraid of this move and the doors it may open to the OS market. Googles business plan is built upon ads. Somethign this cheap, sold at walmart is bound to have ads which will work the acceptability of ads incorporated into software into a potential viable reality.

I would have absolutly no interest in owning a Google PC. To me Google is just kinda there, they let me operatre a search engine quickly and don't make it very difficult. But other than that, they seem cheap, and childish with their simplicity, and that's the last thing I want in my house. It's great when I'm looking for something, but I'll stick to having a Mac.

If they can do with *nix what Apple did with it, then they're onto a winner imo.

But hows this going to work? Your average Joe, won't know squat about linux. Yeah sure they'll be able to use it, but what if they want to install something like MSN?

Ok, it might ship with gaim, but that doesn't even touch the official MSN client.

No company's will want to touch google's OS because of the *nix part, and that's sortof whats happened with OS X.

I'm not saying it's going to be a complete failure, they might encorporate some sort of package system, like apt or rpm, but.. I dont know, I can't get my head around how they're going to get *nix down to the usability that OS X and Windows have.

What i really like about this idea, is that technically unaware punters (e.g. grandma) can go out and get a PC to use for surfing and sending mails, without exposing themselves to a torrent of trojans, malware and other nasty stuff thanks to the superior security offered by *nix. On the other hand, I have serious reservations with regards to opening up your PC to Google ads left and right with no way of escaping them...

Started a thread on this yesterday. I don't think that it will be aimed at anyone who reads this site, but to people like my mum. If that is the case it needs bugger all functionality, just email, web browsing, music and video player.

A simple safe box that can be used for web browsing and simple tasks would be a nice idea and would probably sell a buck load as thats all most people use a PC for (consoles for gaming), but where is the information that says this is what is planned? Or is it just rumor!?

An update on the story, which removes the Wlamart link, and with a partial denial from google.
