I am not a hard-core gamer but am looking for something reasonable for my Dell PowerEdge T300.

    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/pe_t300_spec_sheet.pdf

I have been happy with this card the Sparkle GeForce GT240 in another machine (Dell Optiplex 755) but am open to alternatives, the main boon of this card doesn't require any external power input into the card so consumes little power.

    My budget is £100.

    Many thanks,

    Simon :)

What do you want the card for - gaming? What kind of games are you going to be playing?

Thank you for the reply, mainly for playing Blu-ray media at this stage, my wife may want to play the Avatar game.

The Asus Radeon EAH5670 1GB graphics card could be an alternative?

Any experience and would it be a better option than the Sparkle card?

    Thanks,

    Simon :)

Either one would be fine, I'd just get the cheapest of the two if you're not going to be gaming much. :)

Personally, I'd get the ATI HD5750.

Thanks, does the ATI HD5750 need external power?

Funny enough I may have to rethink what graphics card will work in this server. I may have to select something fairly low end but still this will be better than what is on board.

It has the following PCI slots available and a 16x card will not work, there are workrounds but they involve modifying one of the slots which is a no no.

this is the complement of slots the T300 has

    1 PCIX_5 PCI-X connector (slot 5)
    2 PCIE_X8_4 PCIe x8 connector (slot 4)
    3 PCIE_X8_3 PCIe x8 connector (slot 3)
    4 PCIE_X4_2 PCIe x4 connector (slot 2)
    5 PCIE_X4_1
    DRAC SLOT
PCIe x8 connector (slot 1) (reserved for
    RAC card)

I actually noticed that, is the x8 slot the same size as a x16 slot? Got any pics?

If it is, then the above cards should slot in just fine with minimal performance degredation.

    Thanks again,

I'll take the side off and have a look; been doing some research and you are right the losses will be negligible for what I want to do.

After further research probably the most suitable card available in a PCI-E 1x slot is the

CLUB3D HD4350 or similar PCI-E 1x slot model, so I will look for one of those

Yup, sounds like a plan. A normal PCI-E x16 card won't fit in any of those slots I'm afraid. :)

The HD4350 should be a good choice.

As an update I sourced on of these cards took some time!, installed it and it works just fine :)

Thanks here for your input :)
